Indiana: car is doing fine. Had a major tranny problem that took the dealer 2 attempts to fix, but other than that, perfect.
Agallag: 2002 320i is the model indeed. Good memory.

Transmission. Been through one transmission software update (needed a patch for my car), and one valve-thingy replacement. Other than that, happy as a clam.

I actually heard a story once where a 7 series BMW's software failed (at 160 km/h on the autobahn). Don't know what it did, but just goes to show automation does have its dark sides...

I think it just disabled steering aid or something - dangerous enough though at high speeds, and DEFINATELY shouldn't happen with ANY car, let alone one so damn expensive!

A friend of mine had his car for a few days, but felt the brakes weren't working properly. So he went back to garage, where they said : "Pff, your brakes are working fine, don't worry". Upon driving back home (on a road parallel to a river *hint hint*), while approaching a curve, he suddenly noticed he had no brakes whatsoever. Before even being able to react (handbrake, ...), he drove is car in the river

Luckily, he managed to get out. It goes without saying he sued the garage.
My own car-problems were less serious, but annoying nonetheless: the engine stalled when departing while the steering wheel was turned left/right (cause: central computer didn't adapt the rev for letting the engine provide enough power for both the servo and the driving, so they fitted a new computer), lightswitch malfunctioned (turn the switch to off, and the lights remain on
), transponder prevented me from starting, fuel gauge remained empty, ... But after numerous trips to the garage, everything now seems to be solved...
Why is it so hard to buy something that works immediatly as it should ?

My problem was serious, but since I only had 2 incidents, and both when I was coming to a stop and going really slow (30km/h or so), I didn't bitch too much about it. What would happen is: as I'm slowing down, every warning light imaginable came on (including CHECK ENGINE and CHECK TRANSMISSION), my power steering died and went stiff as a statue, and I lost all capability of accelerating. So I managed to limp over to the side of the road and stop. Turn the car off and on again, and BINGO all is fine, like nothing ever happened (car needed a reboot: BMW powered by Windows). First time it happened, they said it was a known issue that affects a small number of 3 owners, and the fix was updated engine/transmission software. Basically, the dealer said the cars engine computer and transmission computer bumped heads and crashed each other. So they patched it and sent me on my way. I went on vacation 2 days later and drove 18 hours to Nova Scotia, and it was perfect. BUT it happened again while I was there (same stuff, when I was slowing to a stop). So they fixed it AGAIN by replacing some valve thingamaboob. Been fine ever since. *praying* This should NOT happen on a brand new BMW, but it didn't hurt me or cost me anything, so I forgive BMW. I'm still deeply in love with my car.

Ah, too much electronic, I guess. But then I hate automatic transmission anyway, especially if the manual gear is as well done as it is with the new 3 series.
