i think all of you should come here to Lebanon ... see how ppl drive... see how kids under age of 18 drive cars and scooters... and see how ppl walk and cross the road..... trust me if you think you are a pro driver think again.... out here its the survival of the fittest... and as far as what Dogbert claims about the buss drivers thinking that they own the street..... well my dear friend trust me here every one owns the f***ing street.... ambulances and fire trucks have a hard time getting to their locations because of the way ppl drive here.... and further more every time a politician (or even a close relative of one) is on the road they are escorted by a convoy of goons..... one thing is comforting though is that the American ambassador’s convoy no longer has a gunners turret above the car... they used to point their guns at every one ... even pedestrians.....

oh ... you should see how people just stop in the middle of the road just to talk to a pedestrian that they now.. hold up the traffic... and in the very few areas where there are barley working traffic lights every time the lights go green... at the very moment that they do... the cars in the back of the line start honking their horns like crazy to get the ppl at the front to move..... you should see them honk at a car up front even when the light s are red...

which brings me to my point... it is close to impossible to drive a bicycle here....

Cars are expensive, wasteful, and downright lazy for most people who live in urban areas in the West.

Bikes are cheap, healthy and encourage physical activity (many people I see walking around are getting sadly obese, with associated health risks). How much our of taxes go to healthcare for preventible ailments like couch potato-ism - there are a host of fat-related diseases being treated.

Personally I'd like to see gas at $5 a gallon to get people off their 4 wheel addictions, and unless you are a farmer - no more trucks/SUVs for personal urban use. A station wagon is big enough for most families, but sadly the big Car Companies make 3x the profit on BIG gas guzzlers which is why they stopped making a push on smaller cars. And they say smoking is tough to kick...

Use a car only if you absolutely need to, because the day will come when you might actually want to peddle a bike - but then you maybe be so unhealthy that it will only be a wishful thought.

And Mr. Pit, you seem to have a lot of things which upset you and you have a compulsive need to share it with us here. Your posts are getting very predicatable. Do you not have any non-internet friends? (ie. real people). Maybe it is time you quit whining and do something about it. Run for parliament and see how many votes you get with your bellyaching. Or perhaps you will just be offered more cheese with your wine, LOL.

Well unfortunatley trains and buses don't go to where I want to walk at weekends or when I started work they didn't run at the appropiate times. A lot people find this a problem. Okay a lot can walk and don't who should do

Now this is a good debating point if you walk you're using your muscles all the time if you cycle you got gears to use to make life easier. I can walk as quick as some people cycle so what good is it doing them.

I would like to see proper public transport system rather than people mouthing off about gridlock and not wanting too put money forward for a proper public transport system

I'm still over weight about two stone I reckon yet I probaly walk 10 miles plus a week. The only thing I do is drink and too much.

20 mins of biking burns 200 calories, twice the bang for the buck.

Biking is easier on the joints than running, plus more versatile in accepting different styles of the participant.

Agreed, it's just that you seem to post a dispropotionate amount of critical posts. My experience with critics in life has been that they are generally trying to compensate for some sort of failure in their personal/professional life. For example movie critics are often failed film-makers/writers. I was only suggesting that you may get more satisfaction by actually doing something about your grievances than airing them to a bunch of virtual folks who have remotely a chance to affect change. Community volunteering is a good springboard for such activity, perhaps there are some groups your community which reflect your views Mr. The Pit. Or how about actually starting one yourself with weekly meetings and mailing campaigns.

I appreciate the soapbox forum, but latley it has been like Pit's Venting forum. No offense.

Assuming the cyclist is not using the gears to make it as easy as possible

Biking is easier on the joints than running, plus more versatile in accepting different styles of the participant.

Since I was kid when I last went cycling difficult to argue. All I know is I did my knee in once and had trouble for years before I went jogging. Jogging cured my knee I've stopped since but the trouble hasn't come back.

Politics is a different field. A lot people know the truth but saying it is sucide. A few of my friends have suggest I do go for it however it needs lots of money and you also have to sell parts of your beliefs to gain votes.
