Why has noone answered the original question? I wonder if anyone in the UK can confirm we actually ask for a beefburger though, where appropriate?

The original question is easy. Ground sirloin came to popularity in Hamburg. The interesting part is that it seems that the hamburger (the thing with the bun) is actually American, invented somewhere around 1890 or so.

How did RibsteakRon not know that the "chopped sirloin steak" was from Hamburg, and Americans simply added the bun and called it a "hamburger"? There, is that a satisfactory question, while still containing the answer?

of course there is beef on a hamburger. What McD or Burger King sell as hamburgers is a joke, though.
