I think American is the proper term. If you look at things closely you will see that even the hypenated groups in the US use American in their labeling. (ie. African-American, Japanese-American, etc.)

You would think so and that probably would be the correct statement but you are in North America in Canada do you consider yourself an American or a Canadian? When people around the world think of an American what do they usually think of? Someone from the United States of America. How that all came about I have no idea I just know that is the way it seems to be.

South Americans think they have as much right to be called "Americans" as USA residents. Paraguay or Argentina don't have the word "America" in their names though.. perhaps that makes us unlucky.

1. US Americans seem to think American is their Registered Trademark property, and only US Americans count anyway.

2. Most non-US Americans prefer their own identity.

3. Being known as American can get you in some deep shit in some places..

A lot of Canadians I know will correct me. If I say I'm from America, they'll say "me too." I'm from the States, around them.

The reason is much simpler.

the U.S doesn't have a name. It's a collective of states. You have Texans, Yankees etc.
Since the U.S isn't a name but a definition, the denominator is used as the name - Unites States of America.

As in "I'm an American who's ancestors once came from America...."

Well, we do use to call U.S, The States here (beside U.S; U.S.A or America), refer to something in America as "in the States" (they'll probably say stateside or something).
There's only one name for the inhabitants though, Americans.

im canadian, but sometimes when people from far away countries ask where im from, i just say the states, that way i dont have to explain to them that i dont have an igloo and "eh?" isnt my every second word and stuff like that.

That's funny, since a lot of the time when my friends go to Europe, they say they're Canadian so they don't have to put up with the anti-American crap.
