Geobreeders. Doesn't make much sense, doesn't even have a very good conclusion, it's just 3 ovas of zany fun. I haven't found anything else quite like it yet. I liked it enough I bought a couple of the manga collections. (The sequel, Geobreeders:Breakthrough, supposedly sucks though. I haven't seen it myself.)

They've just finished showing Neon Genesis Evangelion and Martian Successor Nadesico here on Sci-fi, they were both excellent. They also showed Blue Gender, which I thought was so-so.

What else do I like: Ghost in the Shell, Wings of Honneamise, Orguss 02, Metropolis, Patlabor movies, Blue Submarine 6, Kurogane Communication...

This topic seems to come up every month or so, but I don't mind - it's good to hear recommendations from everyone.

favourite? jeez, don't ask such difficult questions...

the anime with best buildup to ending for me is Sadamitsu the Destroyer (though Irresponsible Captain Tylor also has a damn good ending), best comedy Haunted Junction, etc etc.

There are way too many series which are very good to list them here (and of course even way more series which are average or piss-poor).

              Hrm...

Well, not that any of it hasn't been said before, but...

EVA, Escaflowne, Ah Megami Sama (Oh My Goddess for the basic Japanese impaired), Project A-Ko (although that's less of a series and more of a set of OAV's), Outlaw Star... that's what's sitting in my DVD rack at the moment.

Macross - can't afford to buy the set yet, Serial Experiments Lain, Record of Lodoss War...

And don't even get me started on stand-alone movies!

There are MANY good stand-alone movies IMO, so yeah, we could be discussing this for quite some time!

Yep. I tried to stick to "series". Although you could technically call some stand-alones series, since that's the way they were written, intended to run, or whatnot... but let's just not do it.

I forgot to mention Ranma 1/2 - that's some funny-ass shtuff there. I'm a very big fan of the style of anime - it's probably girls' anime, but hey I'm a gaijin so it's ok - that involves situational funnies. You know, the stuff that basically has the premise "one guy and TOO DAMN MANY WOMEN". I feel that it allows us a glimpse into the depths of the Japanese Psyche... and that is a scary, crazy, dangerous place.

Some other series which I've only seen bits of but which are worthy of note:

                  - Gunsmith CATS
                  - Battle Angel (or is that just 2 or 3 movies? I can never tell)
                  - Cowboy Bebop

And of course the old standbys - the Americanized animes:

                  Force Five:
                  - Gai King
                  - Grandeizer
                  - Starvengers
                  - Danguard Ace
                  - The 3 Spaceketeers

Also Starblazers (aka Space Battleship Yamato) and Robotech (Macross, etc.).

                  That was some great stuff.

And a BOO-HISS prize to Voltron, perhaps the most butchered anime to ever make its way to the American small screen.

                  - Gurm

P.S. Although this isn't about movies, a special booby-prize goes to Princess Mononucleosiskokobokone. How can a movie with such amazing animation be such an obvious ploy to get us to sympathize with tree hugging hippie freaks?

P.P.S. Yes I know Tolkien used the same theme throughout the Lord of the Rings. I'm a hypocrite. So sue me.

Ah GunsmithCATS! There's always a panty shot in that series!
It's still a good series even without their famous panty shots. A lot of action and a lot of gun fighting.

All Purpose Cultural Cat Girl Nuku Nuku is a good series also. It's about this female android that....dammit, forgot the rest. But it's good!

There's Dragon Knight if your into cheesy sexist softcore adventure-porn, or whatever category it falls into. Personally I find this one quite amusing, and some of my female friends enjoy it too!

Gurm, Battle Angel is a pair of OVAs. (or is it OAVs?) Although when they showed it here a while ago, they just spliced them together into a movie. I gather that happens a lot.
