4 words for you all:

    National Festival of Beers

It's an annual event at a pub near where I used to live (still near here, just not within walking distance now. )

Over 130 beers on tap! There are some wierd and wonderful concoctions there - such as the aptly named "Hemp Beer", which is filtered through Hemp - and names like "Canetoad", "Old Admiral", and "Quayle Ale".

The best I've sampled (I've only tried about 10 of them in the 2 years I've gone to it) has to be Beez Neez. It's only available at 3 places that I know of. One is at the beer festival. Another is the brewery at the Gold Coast where it's made. It costs twice as much as a regular beer does ($49 for a carton as opposed to about $22 for commerical products) but it's worth it's weight in gold!!

It's brewed with Honey and instead of having that typical beer aftertaste, it has a really really smooth honey aftertaste (up until then it tastes like a normal beer).

Anyway, check out the event and the menu here

Only 130 beers? Ouch. We have 35-50 just at the Colorado Brewer's Festival, and there's 49 more states.

          <---------!!!

Hey we're talking Deutchland here, the motherland of beers (well almost) so it's not a big surprise.

But the best beer I have tasted in recent memory is Pilsner Urquell. I were in Prague in may last year and I'm going back for a short vacation with my friends in june. A truly wonderful city, part of the reason is that the beer, which is just fabulous(most of them) also costs less than Coca Cola.

We just enjoy our beers. It's obvious to me that you're a bunch of alcoholics.

                BAD B33R JOKE TIME:

Ah-nold Schwartzenhagger and Sylvester Stalone where looking to start a new beach-side resturant franchise. After they agreed to the business term they got in an argument about what kind of food to specialize in.

Sly said, in his normal mumbled speech, "ah tink we need ta sell hot dogs."

Ah-nold replied, in his thick Austrian accent, "no you poopy head! Two syllables: be-er."

...okay...so that joke works much better when spoken by someone who knows how to do a Sly and Ah-nold accent. It was worth a shot...

As for brewery to population...Denmark is not too shabby. Second only to Germany in alcohol consumption per captia in Europe! Every city I have ever been in with over 10 000 people had at least one local brewery.

No worries Maggi ... beer is a passionate subject; kind of like reacting to the French snubbing California wines. I'm sure the Germans know something about making good beer. ... ... I'd love to spend some time in Germany to taste a wide sampling of brews. Most of the German beers I've had were bottled and outside Germany.

I really enjoy going to beer festivals and seeking out the few really great brews. The festivals are a great way for me to taste the latest offerings from the Western states. Then there's the specialty beers like the winter ales. The micro-brews change all the time so its a constant tasting hunt. Bottoms up!

                    coopers pale ale...mmm good

and for the more decerning there is the.

The coopers collectors special...brewed and bottled, but it is still active(the yeast is still alive), so it is best left for a year two to improve....A real gem

Thats what I miss most about South Aust.. being able to buy my coopers pale, and also lay away a few of the special for 12 ~ 18 months

Coopers is too small to get here, only 'Australian beer I can get here easily is 'Fosters' Blech - Hint to all the non Australians, the only people who drink Fosters in Australia are the tourists

I can buy two dogs here - go figure.....

Why buy Foster's in Australia? It sucks just as much if we buy it here.

My favorite mass produced beer in Eastern Australia was VB (Victoria Bitter). I also recall having some great suds at a brew pub in Sidney (can't recall the name).

yeah fosters....Hehe very nasty joke to play on the unsuspecting.

VB is a reasonable bulk beer to be consumed by the carton, but I prefer Swan Draught for such occasions.

There are quite alot of small breweries all over Australia, and they make some nice beers....Mmmmm Honey beer

Matilda(in Perth) make some good beers, eg Dog bolter
