JEDEC Reports DDR-II Specs [11:55 pm] Rat

And one more story from JEDEC Committee. During the conference in Santa-Clara (California) the

committee shared some preliminary DDR II specifications, which is the second generation DDR SDRAM

standard expected to enter the mass market some time in 2004, as we read over here.

In the field of system memory, DDR-II specs are determined by the chips with the resulting

frequencies of 400MHz, 533MHz, and 667MHz (600MHz frequency was removed from the list). In the

graphics field they pre-defined the following frequencies: 800MHz and 1000MHz.all the chips will

work at 1.8V and their capacity will be at least 512Mbit. The packaging should be 200-, 220- and

      240-pin FBGA.

DDR II memory will use the same set of instructions but slightly modified and updated. The new

DDR II features include: "posted CAS", differential strobe, OCD (off-chip output driver

calibration), ODT (on-die termination), burst interrupt and a 4-bit "pre-fetch" instead of the

2-bit one as in DDR I.

The development of DDR II specs will be completed this month and in June they will release the

definition of supported chips. In September the committee will offer the first specs for memory

modules. All the largest memory makers promised to start the production of DDR II samples in the

end of this year or beginning of the next year at the latest.

      DDR333, DDR400 and DDR700 SDRAM from Samsung
Posted 1/28/02 at 11:55 pm by Rat

Samsung, following its tradition of supporting a bunch of different standards simultaneously

today officially announced that they started production of the first engineering samples of

DDR333 and DDR400 SDRAM memory chips intended for use in system memory (PC2700 and PC3200 DIMM

modules, 8bit chips). Besides, they also produced the first samples of the new DDR700 intended for the graphics market (graphics cards, 32bit chips).

The interesting thing about it is that Samsung is going to start mass production of DDR333 chips

only in August-September this year. it is exactly at that time that Samsung believes they will be

demanded in mass quantities. In fact, this is a pretty strange supposition especially bearing in

mind that SiS645 chipset already supports PC2700 DDR SDRAM, and soon VIA KT333 will come out,

also supporting this memory. However, such a giant company as Samsung can be pretty happy with

the "limited quantities" till autumn. As for the mass production of other announced memory chips,

nothing has been revealed so far.
      ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

I wonder if this is relevent?

Actually the GF4 is officially rated at 10.4 gigs but uses 2.8 ns memory that's actually rated to 11.4 gig's(357 mhz=714 mhz DDR).

Hardly twice the bandwith and not bad considering you can get these card at Mwave for 330$ now(pny GF4 4600 ti).

                The GF4 4600 only gets 10.4GB/s, the 4400 8.8GB/s.

Like i said in my previous post, offically yes...

But ever single GF4 4600 user(and i mean everyone) has no problems at all running their memory in excess of 700 mhz, which the memory itself is rated to handle...

So what? If this 19.2GB/s turns out to be true, how fast do you think the memory will be rated for?

You're trying to compare the rumored shipping specs of Matrox's new card with the overclocked numbers that some Ti4600 users get from their cards.

Even worse, you're theorizing that some cards might come slower than the rumored specs. So you're downgrading the Parhelia rumors to try to compare them to overclocked nVidia numbers. What kind of sense does that make?

It's a shame the card can't achieve thoroughput anywhere near it's theoretical limits, otherwise you may actually have a point

Interesting, is there some tell-tale benchmark that shows REAL memory throughput?

Sure, you can do a fillrate test, or see the effect of antialiasing on the performance. You can use simple math to see if the memory is performing near its limits.

Give some time and I am sure we will see a card released that will show what reaching limits really means.

I guess Serious Sam can give these numbers. Is that a benchmark worth trusting?
