Universal should certainly protect their rights but:

The notice/threat was sent via email and they were given ~ 72 hours notice. Not much time and no way to accurately confirm the origin of the email.
It was encouraged for fans to advertise the show/movie to help it succeed.
They want everything taking down even just having the word "Serenity" in chinese which is not copyrightable.
