Yeah, they interviewed the guy's stepdaughter. Apparently before he left home to become a street prophet, she left home because he was always "hugging and kissing on me in ways I didn't like".

    Uh-oh.

If only that was true, but people in supposedly higher moral positions just tend to hide it more easilly at least until one outsider finds out because it just cannot be true.

Yeah.. probably too much to hope for..

Her dad was quoted as saying:
Asked how she had changed, he said she had returned home ''really a young woman.''
Daddy's a bit naive I suppose.. or more forgiving than Jesus himself.

Well at least she is alive and well enough to smile in public. That's a good sign.

Yeah, I mean... maybe I knew a different sort of 15-year-olds.

But unless the people holding them had REALLY BIG GUNS... there's no way that a mere two adults could keep track of your average 15-year-old for more than a couple hours. Honestly.

The hospital I worked at for 25 years was part of a larger facility that had 5,000 inpatient and a large outpatient psychiatric department. In that time I personally saw several people who were "psyched" by abusers into being compliant to a fault.

It's called "the Stockholm syndrome", which is a fancy way of saying a victim will eventually identify with their captor as a coping mechanism. Perhaps the most common example is when someone (can be either sex) stays with an abusive spouse.

                      The most common situational types:

                      * A person threatens to kill another and is perceived as having the capability/willingness to do so.

                      * The victim can't escape, so his or her life is perceived as depending on the captor.

                      * The victim is isolated from outsiders so that the only other perspective available to her or him is that of their captor.

                      * The captor is perceived as showing some degree of kindness to the victim.

All of these occur quite often with adults, so a 14 year old girl would be easy pickings for someone with a sufficiently forceful personality.

Oh, I know about Stockholm and Helsinki syndromes. The issue is the initial captivity. I just don't see it. But as I said, I may have hung out with a different sort of teenager when I was that age. LOL.

Well, she was apparently a very quiet, religious girl, and part of a devout Mormon family. It seems she led a rather sheltered life until the kidnapping, and she probably was so paralyzed with fear when the guy came at her with a knife, especially if she was afraid for her little sister sleeping in the next bed, that she just sort of allowed herself to be led. I really doubt she could have had the hots for some filthy vagabond in his late 40s, especially since she hardly knew the guy.

Yeah, she's probably different from the kind of teenager you hung out with. Not saying you hung out with slutty chicks who got the hots for 50yo tramps..

Just qualifying that, since I was raised in a Mormon family But not a Utah Mormon family I don't say this out of disrespect for my own religion, just as an general observation.

For some odd, unknown reason, many Mormon families feel the need not to associate with anyone but in their own little cliche, even within their own congregation. It's the silliest thing. It is VERY prevelent in highly populated Mormon areas, like in Utah and parts of Idaho. Not to say they are ALL like that, but there are a lot. They have earned their own name amongst us non-Utah/Idaho dwellers called, Utah Mormons - a breed of their own.

I also want to say that 'Utah Mormons' per say aren't bad, just different. My bro in Boise, ID said people will go as far as move 3 blocks down to stay in the same congregation when boundries change and keep their cliches. They have a certain ... I don't know ... air about them that if you don't live 100% perfect in your life as they think it should be lived, they will not associate with you unless they must. They tend to shelter their kids so much they don't know anything about what happens outside their area and Disneyland.

I don't know, it's just odd. There was a 'Utah Mormon' mom in my old, old, old congregation that black listed me because I liked hanging out and having fun with my non-Mormon friends. The Dad was a cool guy though, but mom mad ethe dating decisions Too bad, too. The daughter my age was a cute redhead.

I can't say anything about the Smart's, never met them. They seem to be very protective, but that'e very understanding under the circumstances. I wouldn't be surprised one bit if she had been heavily sheltered in her life, but I can't say. It will be hard for her growing up in Utah after what happened to her, but that another story.

I heard on the news tonight that Mitchell supposedly had a "revelation" and "God told him" to find seven wives. Elizabeth was the first, and they are thinking the cousin must have been the second. Bizarro.. at least they caught the guy before he shanghaied any more "wives"

Sounds a lot like David Koresh.
