Ontario has compulsory automobile insurance. Before you can attach plates to a vehicle or renew your registration, the vehicle must be insured. In Ontario, private companies provide insurance coverage. All vehicles must be insured for third party liability for at least $200,000. This covers you in the event that you injure or kill someone or damage someone's property. Collision insurance to cover damage to your own vehicle is a good idea but not required by law. When driving your own or someone else's vehicle, you must carry the pink liability insurance card for that particular vehicle. You must show this card when a police officer asks for it. If you do not, you can be fined up to $200.

Actually here is a cut and past from a legal forum:
"You are required by statute to carry a standard form policy of
automobile insurance. The Compulsory Automobile Insurance Act does not
provide for individuals to self insure. If you wish to self insure,
the way the Toronto Transit Commision does for example, you would
require permission in the form of an act of the Ontario legislature.

I talked to several insurance agents..
State farm refused to insure me bacause I had one speeding ticket of 15Km/h over a year ago.. the one Andrew Gallagher recommended would not take new business without me getting house insurance also ( I don't own a house!).. a few gave me quotes of way more than the $2175 pilot had quoted.. not looking good
I talked to the manager at my night job ( where I get the wet t-shirt pics from) and he recommended this lady in Ottawa, and sure enough, I was quoted $1361... sold
