Helpdesk: Okay can right click with your mouse button.

Dumbuser: Gigggle Giggle this is to technical which button is the right button.

Todays star caller. They haven't been bad today.

User: I've connected to the internet and nothing is happening.

Basically the user is waiting for the internet to suddenly appear on screen all by itself. Doh.

I feel your pain Gurm, calling tech support is always my worst nightmare.
Me: Ok, your lousy software messed up the PC.
Them : Ok, we need to edit the registry.
            Me: ok, which key?
            Them: Click, start, then run....
Me: I am in the registry, which key?
Them : Type regedit in the run box....

Been there so many times just dealing with Comcast and to a lesser extent Covad. I love it when the Comcast rep is confused that they can see my modem but not my computer. They seem to think they have the right to be able to examine my machine without asking. That and they never check signal strength when installing cable and/or cable modems. They install it and it happens to work. Five minutes after they leave it is starting to randomly drop the connection. This is at two locations. Tech support always want to scan for the modem even though I tell them that it is an intermittent problem.

It took three phone calls to covad after the installer was here just to get the damn DNS servers.

              Grrr.

The worst part is when _I_ have to call support for something.

Me: I'm not an idiot. I do this for a living, I've been your supervisor before. Just pass me through to a level 2 tech, there's a problem with the signal on my street.

Them: Ok, can you click on...

Me: No. Pass me through to a level 2 tech NOW.

Them: Which OS are you running?

              Gpar_
              Ahhh. So very true.

My favorite method of dealing with a problem like this is to get overly technical with them with excessive use of terminology. They then realize how much I know and usually how little they know and usually allow me to control the call from then on.

Comcast is on my personal shit list.

When it was Media One, the installers all knew their shit, they showed up with test TV's and test laptops and tweaked everything up the wazoo.

Not enough power on the line? Here's a signal booster sir, have a nice day!

Now, it takes 3 trips out for them to finally realize that yes, I am in fact getting SHIT for signal (3 techs test it, only the third knows that the crappy readings mean LOW SIGNAL), and to fix it.

Now, instead of 200KB/sec. with intermittent drops I have a rock-solid signal with 300KB/sec. - but it took me 2 months to get it.

For me the transition period from MediaOne to Comast was the worst as nobody seemed to know which end was up, but I got through it.

A couple of weeks later I had problems where the signal at the box was OK but the Toshiba modem kept dropping the signal. Took 'em 2 weeks to figure that out even with me yelling "CHANGE OUT THE F*****G MODEM YOU MORON" in the techs ear every other day

Now running a SurfBoard without issues.

Comcasts service has been good since though.

In this time i worked on helpdesk, i learned this:

"If you ignore a problem long enough, problem will be fixed by itself."

It works in 85% of cases.

BTW, has anyone had problem with "ghosts"?
Places where every comp has problems?

                            "Ghosts"?

"Ghosts" are places where no computer works. For instance, place where I worked before (on helpdesk & service), we had one workplace where every computer was blocking and BSOD-ing. But only on that spot. When you move the same computer 2 meters or so, everithing worked fine. Two HP (BX based) computers, one Compaq (i815 based), and HP notebooke 6000 series had trables there. We changed there 20 cables (power & LAN), 10 keybords & mouses, 3-4 LAN cards, but "ghosts" where still present.

"Ghosts" are often mestaken whit dumb users. I have that where I work now. When We changed Pentium-based computer with 32MB RAM at one user, and gave him P4-based, new computer was BSOD-ing & blockink 2-3 times a day, acording to user. Acctualy, computer worked fine, but it was to quick for that user. To please the user, we gave him PII-based computer, but "problems" stayed. Finaly, the user recived old Pentium-based computer with 32MB of RAM, and the user is happy.

                            Go figure that out.

What about people that just break computers by walking in the room.
You can put a bag over their heads, hide them in closets but the machines in the room will blue screen without fail. Send them away and everything will work.
