As far as I've heard (from a non confirmed source), prime minister Jean Cartienne won't retire till 2004 (probably february) while a replacement has already been elected (Paul Martin). Paul Martin is supposed to become the new PM November this year (?).

I'm sure they could come to a compromise, appoint an interim Prime Minister and have three prime ministers

Paul Martin will become the new Liberal party leader on Nov 14.
Jean Chretien will remain prime minister untill he retires, at which point Paul will step in.

                As I understand it, anyway.
