According to Janet, I think Justin was supposed to rip off the black cover revealing the red frill underneath. I guess they forgot to make the red a whole different garment, and sewed the red and black together...

At least that's what it says on http://www.drudgereport.com/

FLASH: Janet Jackson denies that the nudity was deliberate, saying that Timberlake was supposed to rip away only the top layer and leave a bit of red lace behind...
    AZ:

I understand where you are coming from, but in my culture (Hindu) that is exactly how I grew up, and I've grown up fine. I just feel that any parents (and yes my view is biased) would be outraged at what was shown. I do understand where your coming from, however, rather than belabor the point, lets agree that as an adult, I have no problem with nudity, but as a parent to be (nothing planned yet) I know I would be very upset.

      Heheheheheeeeee

      David Letterman (during his monologue):
I was happy to see that thing happen with Janet Jackson.
It meant for one night that I wasn't the biggest boob on CBS!

I'm not sure how popular Dave Ross is, but he has a short few minute commentary on the AM radio I listen to every morning. This is what he said today

Boy, the TiVo got a workout yesterday...

It's good that the President is planning to investigate that bum info about the weapons of mass destruction.... but now we have a whole NEW scandal on our hands. How is it, despite all that security, Al Qaeda was able to sneak a Woman of Mass Seduction into a nice healthy superbowl halftime show?

        Audio

I thought Justin was going to get Janet pregnant right there.

Instead he merely pulled off her right breast cup, suddenly making high definition television worth every penny.

        "Q:...rrrrip!"

CBS is SHOCKED that it could happen -- as are we all, considering that the thing appeared to be RIVETED ON.

Justin called it a "wardrobe malfunction." Accidental. Including that accidental pastie on her nipple. In other words, they think we're IDIOTS.

But frankly the malfunction began long before that.

        Did you hear Kid Rock?

        Audio

        [Q:... the cynics.]

[Let me help you with the lyrics:

All the crackheads, the critics, the cynics
And all my heros in the Methodone Clinics
All you bastards in the IRS
For the shots of jack and the caps of meth

Q:...get in the pit and try to love someone."

Yeah! And now, LET'S PLAY SOME NICE HEALTHY FOOTBALL!]

And then ... just as you're bringing the kids back into the room -- the Cialis commercial comes on:

        Audio

And all of this on the same network that banned the "moveon.org commercial about the national debt" as being against network policy.

Next year -- how about a nice marching band?
Ladies and gentlemen, take my advice, pull down your pants and slide on the ice.

            Same here...

Well, it just shows there are more culturul differences between the US and Europe than we sometimes like to think..

Just out of curiousity: does this mean you don't have lingerie-adds in magazines ? Or fashion reports in the news (the haute-couture sometimes shows a lot more than what was visible here) ? Some acts (circus arcrobats, magicians assistents, ...) also show some ... euhm... cleavage ...

Other half was flipping through the channels yesterday afternoon when she stopped on one that had an expose on body painting... Hottie hot hot models completely nude except for the painted on bikini's and what not.

Nice closeup's but funny how a little paint was all it took to make it past the sensors

she got what she wanted - attention.
I wonder how people keep their kids from seeing (semi-)nude women anyway...

If you Europeans think we Americans have strange attitudes about some things, you are as against multiculturalism as I am.

The only thing that condemns both cultures is the forcing of each to adapt to the other. The subtleties of each are destroyed, and you are left with the lowest common denominators, a base and twisted mess.

Huh? What do you mean by that? Hasn't this been happening for the most part in the USA for the past 150 years or so?
Why is it called tourist season, if we can't shoot at them?

Yep. Why do you think we have such a simplistic culture based upon nothing but greed, where any commonality of discussion must be completely dumbed-down, and as a group we can only see questions in a very one-dimensionional way?

                            Please understand that there is statutory limitation in the US on what a broadcast channel (vs. cable/satellite) can send out over the airwaves. This portion of a Washington Post article summarizes it and the FCC's position;

The FCC has defined broadcast indecency as "language or material that, in context, depicts or describes, in terms patently offensive as measured by contemporary community broadcast standards for the broadcast medium, sexual or excretory organs or activities."

The halftime show was noteworthy in light of recent events surrounding broadcast indecency, said Jonathan Cody, Powell's legal adviser. Radio giant Clear Channel Communications was fined $755,000 last week for several sexually explicit broadcasts. Two weeks ago, a bill was introduced in Congress that would increase FCC fines for indecency tenfold. Actress Diane Keaton uttered a profanity on a recent awards show and the FCC said it is considering tougher sanctions against indecency, such as broadcast license revocation.

Also, Powell has asked his fellow commissioners to overturn a ruling by the FCC's enforcement bureau that determined a profanity uttered by rock singer Bono during an NBC awards broadcast in January 2003 was not indecent.

"These guys have been put on clear notice," Cody said. "We are all questioning with great wonder what exactly CBS was thinking. [The FCC] is going after them for this."

Cody said FCC lawyers were studying statutes to ascertain how far the agency's authority extends to investigate. "There's not a stone that's going to be left unturned as to what our abilities are," he said.
Under these regulations cable/satellite stations can and do send out nudity and very strong sexual content and are allowed to do so.

The difference is that cable/satellite is purchased by the homeowner with knowledge that the content could be adult oriented while broadcast is freely available in homes where such content may not necessarily desired by the homeowner. Even with cable/satellite has to provide parental controls based on content.

As such the broadcast limitations are protective in the sense that children can't just hit a "previous channel" button on the remote and end up seeing such content.
