    I hope that once they make it that it'll be immediately available to the public, or just myself. There's a couple of networks I'd like to fry.

          This news is at least a month old. Much more info in the slashdot article and comments.

          Walter Francis writes "The U.S. Navy has apparently been busy. They have been focusing heavily on the next generation of weapons and propulsion systems, including Microwave, Laser, and Electromagnetic-Kinetic weapons, more commonly known as railguns. What specifically surprised me was the fact that...

          And I'm sure some Sci-Fi author wrote of these long ago, at least they're in the Mechwarrior/Battletech universe.

            No, you're thinking of HERF guns.

                    The US Navy is running up to a concept calle "the all electric ship". Rail guns are to be an integral part of this concept and may be deployed by 2011-2012.

                    Plans are for the post-Nimitz class of aircraft carriers (CVN-21 program, formerlly CVNX, due in 2012-2013) and the DD(X) cruiser now in development are to be "all electric" ships right down to the aircraft carriers catapults, which now run on steam.

                    Can you imagine being launched from a carrier by a form of rail launcher?

                    The projections are calling for the first-gen guns to launch a projectile with an impact velocity of MACH-5, a range of up to 250 miles and a firing rate of 6/minute per gun.

                    These should be instructive;

                    GlobalSecurity.org CVN-21 page:

                    Military,Systems,Ships,Future,CVN-78 Gerald R. Ford,CVN 21,VN-X,CVX,

                    GlobalSecurity.org DD(X) page:

                    The Navy's new DD(X) program is the centerpiece a family of three surface combatant ships, including a destroyer, a cruiser and a smaller craft for littoral operations

                    If you want to make your own rail gun;

                      Actually, sounds a lot like maglev. I think it would be easier than a railgun. But...wheeeee!

                        It's always fun until someone loses an eye... If everyone just agreed to use Nerf guns, there'd be a lot less worried mothers out there.

                          I still like the concept of solving all problems by having the leaders of each nation fight it out in good old fashion hand-to-hand combat.

                              Dr Mordrid - best part about it is they also have plans for a GPS tracked/guided shell for the railgun system...

                              artillery that is fast, has an incredably long range, can do a shit-ton of damage, *and* is scary-accurate?

                              hell yeah!
