    Proud parents.....

Our son Erik (6 years) started in 1st grade earlier this month.

As part of his schools intake all 1st graders take tests for both math and reading to determine their pre-existing skills. At the school open house held last Wednesday we got the reading results. The below scores are expressed as a grade equivalency.

    Reading basic skills: 3.5
    Reading comprehension: 3.5
    Overall reading score: 3.5

In other words our starting 1st grader has a grade 3.5 reading level

His teacher also said that his vocabulary is likely beyond even 3rd grade since it's not unusual for him to use, and explain the meaning of, scientific terms. He watches the Science, Learning and Discovery Kids channels a lot.

He was also given a 2nd grade math drill in which he was to count by 10's, 5's and then 2's as high as he could without stopping. Incoming 2nd graders are expected to top out around 100-130.

Erik stopped at 500, at which time he stated that he was bored and had already done this on his own stopping at 700

We had no f***ing idea he was doing mental math drills on his own.
