Keep collecting the black circles - you can get the square cut in size, 1000 points, or 'x' seconds of slow motion or invincibility.

I just hit 14920.

Note also that the red squares don't kill you, just subtract a thousand points from my experience.

As for my first try, I got to 300 before I decided to see if I could collect red squares

Edit: Red circles can also mean 'x' seconds of "evil squares" (where they're all red) or high-speed, or the square enlarged in size.
