If you are blackbelt it doesn't mean that you can clobber anyone...In Aikido for example, becoming a black belt means that you graduated from learning all the basics and will start to learn advanced skills which takes many many years to master.

Just because you are a black belt doesn't mean you know everything

Excellent! Thanks for the links and excellent info! I watched a Ju-Jitsu class at lunch today that kind of interested me. At this place, they have a "non-throwing" class for people who don't like the idea of being flipped and tossed around. I think this is for me. I'd hate to start all this, only to break my hand/foot by being thrown around (I'm a klutz ya see). Got to see the Iceman himself illustrating grappling techniques (Jean-Yves Theriault). I think I'll pound the gym at work for a few more months and take the plunge. Thanks again folks!

Oddly enough, one of my instructors used to do boxing, and he has a story about getting "clobbered" by a very small woman when he started aikido.

@Elie: I asked you this in the Japan pictures thread, but I think this is a much better place:

As for competition, do you not do embu or randori? What style of aikido do you practise? (I do Shodokan, which is a branch of Tomiki)
I take it you do traditional aikido?
Blah blah blah nick blah blah confusion, blah blah blah blah frog.

That's because most good boxers could sit there for an hour getting pummeled by a martial artist and not even feel it, then strike back with a wicked hook and level them. Two different forms of fighting. Boxing is fighting for large men (even if they don't weigh a lot).

Though that does remind me ... that's how David Bowie says he keep sin shape, good old fashion boxing. However, if you're in it just for the exersize, I don't see boxing + sparing as a fun thing to do.

Yes I take traditional Aikido called Yoshinkan which is more aggressive than Aikikai (what Steven Segal takes)
And no we don't have competitions just demonstrations and clinics etc.

I'm not familiar with Embu or Randori, seems interesting, I'll ask around.

Also the next thing I want to do is Dayto Ryu Aikido, which is extremly mean but also very cool!
There is also the Korean style Aikido called Hapkido which is also cool.

As a side art, I also take Jodo and soon after I will start Iiaido

            Cheers,

The Rock: Don't take the no throwing class! It is not as bad as you think and you will really learn lots from throwing and most importantly, learning to fall WITHOUT breaking your hands. Really do go for this course, not the "light" version. It is part of Ju-Jitsu. I don't think gym time before is really needed, too, but if it makes you feel better, do it

That really clears up the mystery.

nah, not really - I'm fit enough to get through 1.5 hours of training without that. it's more the "falling" part... as it was the first training, lots of people were there, so there was not much space - we kept falling on each others feet, so to say. and for some reason some of my ribs seem to protest against that now.

my partner had boxing training just before aikido... *sigh*

Brazillian jui-jitsu is very good for when the fight comes into clinch but most street fights are ended with a sucker punch as the first strike. Personally i think muay thai and jui-jitsu are the best ones to learn or boxing and jui-jitsu. I like the boxing because it teaches you what a punch feels like and most people are shocked when they get hit for real and freeze up, then they get a hard knockout.
the aikido is very gentle like a flower a very sleepy form of jui-jitsu, with lots of spinning and love thoughts.
in jui-jitsu you learn to apply the same wrist locks as aikido but you do them correctly forcefully and mercilessly---->(how it actually works to control someone in real life) plus you get to learn how the lock feels and will know when someone is faking pain and when the wrist is close to snapping
aikido isnt very realistic most fighters cant handle one person let alone five or eight
dont to pick on aikido but i went up to green belt in it and it is fun and veryzen but not for self defense go jui-jitsu if you want to do only one but get to a boxing club once in a while and spar see what a punch is like

[edit] someone posted that muay thai and boxing are viscious and you get very hurt--wrong-- it depends on the club some people like to think they are tough by not wearing protective gear in practice. that just means they are injured going into a fight...with adrenaline pumping the pain will not be a factor until after youve defended yourself and gotten away... so learn the techniques and what being hit is really like and i dont mean getting knocked out or getting your a@# handed to you every week. IMHO always get a feel for the club you plan on joining sit in on a class and ask students and instructor questions and be honest you are not obliged to join if you take a free class.

Come on - nobody can face five to eight fighters of the same size and strength if they are determined.
