Yup - 1998, I think.

There was no lava spewing into the air, but there was some flowing (and a lot of smoke). We have a video taken from several cameras on the helicopter (edited with Enya music for the soundtrack) - there were only a few spots that had visible lava flow.

We also hiked out on the new land (I can't remember the name of the point) that has been formed, and took some night shots of the lava going into the water - it was a red glow on the bottom of the steam cloud - awesome.

(Of course, we then thought about the fact that we were standing on an active volcano, and that we had hiked out 45 minutes with a camera and a tripod after a 1 hour drive, and that this might not be the best situation )

I'd definitely do it all again.

Yeh going onto the new benches is a risky business as they've got a habit of collasping. I presume you had guides though.
