I've heard of that but not tried it. RM seems like a lot of bloatware but I turn off all the default advertising and it seems ok.

For those people who want a streamlined WMP, I've heard of an app called Media Player Classic, which is made to look like an older version of Media Player (6.4 I think) and doesn't contain the additional "features" that then to turn people off.

I really like wmp9 and would be really annoyed if my copy of Windows didn't have it installed by default.

both quicktime alternative and realplayer alternative use media player classic.

I still use the old WMP 6.4 player on my W2KAS machine. I don't run any of the virus-ware (Java, ActiveX) on that machine. WMP 6.4 ships with the OS.

Not saying that Java isn't bloated, overrated, slow, and generally pathetic, but... well... err... I guess there isn't much more to say about it actually.

Go to google and search for "edskes mirror." Download the latest k-lite codec pack. It includes all sorts of great stuff, including BSplayer, Media Player Classic, QuickTime and RealMedia codecs. I keep it on my USB key.

I don't use anyone's Java. The MSFT VM isn't the only problem. I choose not to use virus-on-demand on my more secure platforms ... I'll keep that stuff penned up.
