We need a black pope. Mix things up a bit!
The Internet - where men are men, women are men, and teenage girls are FBI agents!

I'm the least you could do
If only life were as easy as you
I'm the least you could do, oh yeah
If only life were as easy as you
    I would still get screwed

It's a definate possibility, although from what i've read so far there seem to be about a dozen or so definate possibilities so don't bet the house or anything on it.

You have got to admit, it would definately be different and fire a few people up.

Black hair? Yeah, sounds good, younger than average
        Black skin? Why not?
Black soul? Would not be the first!
Black soutane? Decidely yes, so that he can humbly equate himself with the lowliest priest

Actually, if I were one of the 117, I'd press for Cardinal Jaime Ortega. He seems to be a very human person with his feet firmly on the ground and he could provide a political counterbalance to US dominance.

I'd like to see Cardinal George Pell get the nod. Simply because he's an Aussie. It's never going to happen but i think it would be pretty cool...(even though i'm not Catholic)...

Well none of us are Catholic. I just think it would shake things up a little (not to mention it'd wreck KvH's racist worldview).

All Christians are Catholics. The word comes from the Greek kata holos, meaning in respect of the whole (church). In fact, it also means simply general or widespread (e.g., I have catholic tastes in wine). Strictly speaking, from the ecclesiastical point of view, it means all churches descended from the original pre-great-schism one and includes all the major denominations, at least. I'm Presbyterian, by upbringing, and in our creed we talk of the one Catholic Church.

That having been said, the Roman Catholic Church is just one sect of the Christian Catholic Church, a few of the others being Greek Orthodox, Russian Orthodox, Anglican, Baptist, Presbyterian, Armenian, Coptic, Methodist Churches etc. (I'm not sure about the Society of Friends or Unitarians). Note that most of these Catholics do not recognise the Pope as their spiritual leader; he is leader only of the greater Roman Catholic church, including such other sects as the Society of Jesus etc.

It is therefore pedantically very incorrect to refer to Roman Catholics just as Catholics, if you wish to exclude all the other sects.

Technically I am a Roman Catholic. Well, in some people's eyes. Because if you're Christened that way and brought up that way, you can NEVER escape. Even if you are an athiest

Got baptised as a baby, then went through confirmation when about 11 or 12, which is basically properly signing up, as you didn't know what was going on when you were baptised. Pretty sure thats RC.

I thought it was the other way round that all Catholics were Christians.

Some people that I chatted with on the weekend viewed the Pope as similar to the CEO of a large company.

Given that Christianity existed before Catholicism, that's true, but Brian is also technically correct. However, I would never classify Baptist as anywhere near Catholic in any shape or form.

                              Get excommunicated. It's easy.

I think an Aussie Pope would be quite a laugh.
