Give Stewart a new set and he suddenly thinks he's a serious journalist!

Anyone else see him rake Bernard Goldberg over the coals? For two segments!

He basically told Goldberg that his book is a piece of diversionary crap. I liked Bias and I might have bought his new book before I saw tonight's interview.

He definitely lost one sale. He must be regretting that appearance.

Stewart managed to destroy the entire premise of the book. Now Goldberg will be looking over his shoulder for the rest of his promo tour; worried that everyone who interviews him from now on will take the same stand Stewart did.

It's just a show. And no I don't take it SERIOUSLY. But I was pretty shocked that Stewart was taking it so seriously.

I disagree with your premise that Stewart is a moron. YOU may not like the irreverent tone of his comedy, that doesn't make him stupid.

My point in posting about Pitts condition was more related to the viral meningitis, not who had it. Using high profile people just provides a launching point for informational discussions of such things.

As for Stewart: IMO talent is in short supply to give him a show. Apparently a lot of people agree since his average viewship is averaging about 750,000+ a night. This is about the same as M$NBC on a good night

Seriously, what does his viewership have to do with him being a moron? Are you really floating the premise that only hyper intelligent people get good ratings? Because I don't think that the women on Desperate Housewives are winning the Nobel Prize anytime soon.

Can't you just say he's not to your taste and leave it at that? Why does it have to be a failing with him? Or if you still think he’s a moron, quote something he said that’s moronic.

for someone who doesn't watch the show you seem to have formed a very strong opinion of him. (maybe you're a closet fan after all )

I would argue that Jon Stewart has a very healthy level of self awareness and humility. He regularly talks about his show as being a "fake news show" with no journalistic integrity. That's why I thought tonight was out of character for him.

Again, why not just say that you don't like him? Why does it have to be somebody's fault? His or yours? Is every comedian you like a bona fide intellectual?

I'm a big fan of Mr. Stewart. I particularly enjoyed his appearance on Crossfire .

I missed last night's episode, so I just started to download it. I'll watch it tonight...

Though, I'm not a big enough fan of anybody to waste my time watching TV except for the morning news and weather at 5:00am, and occasionaly a Monk on Friday night.

Caught the show on this morning's repeat. I think Stewart missed the point Goldberg was trying to make. While the people he lists in his book aren't "powerful" in the sense that the President and Congress are "powerful," they still make an impact on our society and shape our culture, a point that Stewart seemed desperate not to yield.

Perfect case in point: have you noticed that since Janet Jackson's Superbowl adventure, the media has gotten so timid about anything potentially "offensive" that radio stations (at least the ones around here) (Clear Channel and Cumulous) are editing out "offensive" words from the popular music they've been playing for 20 or 25 years already, UNEDITED. "Life In The Fastlane" has been stripped of a perfectly well behaved "Goddamned thing." Pink Floyd can no longer mention "Bullshit" when discussing "Money." It's insane. If they were worried about offending someone, they were right. I'M offended at being treated like a child.

It sounds like I'm taking Stewart's side in this. But what Goldberg seems to be saying is that the constant barrage of courseness and incivility in our society is dragging it down. Listen to what political activists say to and about each other. Listen to the tripe that comes out of these high-profile celebrities and then realize that people DO PAY ATTENTION and act on what they hear.

Everything, even minor things, have an effect on everything around them. The current state of popular culture which Goldberg writes about is no different.

Chuck, I think you'd recognize him if you saw him. He was a correspondent for CBS News, and now he's a sports journalist with "Real Sports with Bryant Gumbel" on HBO:
