Protecting yourself is also pretty difficult. While there are several vaccines for bacterial meningitis there isn't a general vaccine for viral meningitls.
The vaccines for MMR and chickenpox do a decent job of preventing infections secondary to the measles, mumps, and chickenpox, but the only enterovirus vaccine is that for polio.
That said researchers in Taiwan announced a couple of years ago that genetically modded tomatos may be a path to better enterovirus vaccines. Arboviruses can also be a factor with the vector usually being insect bites.
