They said FedEx dramatically raised the price on the 2 (3?) day sevice NewEgg defaulted to.

Which is why UPS is the default now. So if you still want Fedex 3-day, you will have to pay for it. Technically, even in those states where they don't charge you sales tax, you are obligated to pay the tax to your state of residence...
