            In closeups it is a new costume, plus features from the 40's;

            New: made not of smooth cloth but textured using an array of tiny sups-shields; darker reds, smaller chest shield.

            Old: sculpted shield (not exact), belt design & boot design

            + a few others....

              The question is, what the hell else can Superman possibly wear? It's easy to update characters like Batman and the X-Men in terms of costumes, but I'm not sure Superman could ever wear anything but my childhood pajamas

              Maybe he could just do the jeans and black shirt that was flying around on Smallville

                wasn't it jeans, blue tshirt and red jacket on smallville?

                he has had some different costumes in the comics but my memory is a little hazy on that.

                then there was that black and white outfit he had in the Batman Beyond cartoon.

                  In the TV show, when he's wearing a red kryptonite ring, he's got jeans and a black shirt on. Supposed to be a badass and all with the red. So far that's the only time he's actually done the whole flying thing.

                  Otherwise, yeah, he's usually in jeans, blue t-shirt, and a red jacket.

                    There have been numerous attempts at updating Supermans costume over the years. Ignoring the original with the triangular shield most were from the 1990's and the "Lois & Clark" and "Batman Beyond" TV series;

                    After Doomsday 'killed' Superman in 1993 several super-characters appeared:

                    This is a figurine showing the whole "Black Superman" costume:

                    In the 1996 Lois & Clark cliffhanger Superman joins other Kryptonians in a war:

                    In another storyline there are blue and red (negative & positive) Electric Supermen:

                    "Keys to the Kingdom" shows a disguntled Superman after Joker has killed Lois and the rest of the Daily Planet staff. Note the black background of the shield, harkening back to Max Fleischers cartoons of the 40's:

                    This older Superman was depicted in an episode of "Batman Beyond", which takes place in the future. The costume is a mix of "Black Superman" with an "Electric Superman"-style shield:

                    Whew....now if the ISP's error msg shows up again just reload the page in a minute. Still having problems

                        Thanks....almost forgot that one.

                        Clark has flown more than once in Smallville. Once when he breaks into Lex's jet to steal the icon and once when destroying the ICBM heading for Smallville.

                          Didn't mean to imply that it only happened once, but neither of those times was he simply Clark.

                            He was Clark when intercepting the ICBM from hitting Smallville. Smallvilles version of Kal-el wouldn't have given a shit.

                            BTW: a "Black Superman" costume makes an appearance in Superman Returns

                              That was more of a jump than flight, and while he has "flown" when just Clark, it was never a direct result of him trying to. He's floated while sleeping and felt like he was willing himself to Lana during the episode with the tornado.

                              Remember, the motto for the show is, "no flight, no tights", with the exception being Kal-el (who wouldn't do the tights anyways).
