    Australian Icon dies

    http://www.news.com.au/heraldsun/sto...005961,00.html

"He was killed in a freak accident in Cairns, police sources said. It is understood he was killed by a sting-ray barb* that went through his chest.

He was swimming off the Low Isles at Port Douglas filming an underwater documentary and that' is when it occured."

    (*poisonous)

He will be remembered and missed greatly.

What a shame.. he was always so entertaining, but with the chances he took I'm not surprised. Very weird the way it happened though.. I always figured some big croc would break his leg or something and then pounce on him.

    RIP

Just read his bio on IMDB.. under personal quotes it reads..

"If something ever happens to me, people are gonna be like 'we knew a croc would get him!'"

He was a great guy and did the world a lot of good.
Oddly, we took a day trip to an aquarium in Tulsa yesterday where ChooChoo petted a stingray.

                            Rest in peace brother.

I feel very sorry for his 2 kids and wife. Atleast he died doing what he loved.

                              Very NASAesque end too.
He may have been a little over confident. The stingray is a dangerous animal, but it's behavior is slightly outside Erwin's considerable experience.
Very rare occurrence. 3 deaths in Australia and 17 world wide in the last 100 years from stingrays. It's hard to imagine a more exotic way to go.
Large stingray barb to the heart, very quick and very unsurvivable.

So we have exotic danger, confident but slightly outside skill set, mistakes unsurvivable.
                              Sounds sadly familiar.
