    Star Trek XI (2008)

    Working title: Star Trek XI (2008)

    Director (rumored): J.J. Abrams (Lost, Alias, MI-III)

    Note: Abrams made getting Trek & full control over production a first condition of his signing a multi-picture deal with Paramount.

    Producers: J.J. Abrams, Damon Lindolf

    Writers: Alex Kurtzman, Roberto Orci

    Production Design: Herman F. Zimmerman (numerous Star Trek)

    Synopsis (rumored):

    A ‘get back to basics’ origin story along the lines of Warner’s "Batman Begins" and MGM’s Bond reboot "Casino Royale". Possibly Kirk’s first mission as Captain of the Enterprise (Dr. Pipers presence tends to confirm) with some pre-original series material to set it up.

    Casting (rumored):

    James T. Kirk: Matt Damon
    Dr. Mark Piper: Philip Seymour Hoffman

    Note: Dr. Piper = Dr. McCoy's predecessor in TOS episode "Where no man has gone before"

    Poster: (gold = command = Kirk; blue = science dept. = Spock)

    That's a really cool poster.

    Not a big fan of TOS, liked Next Gen and Voyager. I think the franchise, if it wants to continue, can't do any more series. Putting everything they got into movies spread over every few years is probably the best way to go.

        Better choice: Ryan Phillippe.

          Gag me gently with a razorblade. No way Phillippe could pull it off. Damon has a nearer look to a young Shatner and if worlds better at acting. I can see Damon pulling it off. I can see Phillippe screwing it up.

            Damon's an emotions-beneath-the-surface guy. Kirk wore his emotions on his sleeve.

              You haven't seen all of his movies have you?

              SillyModeOn: With Damon as Kirk how about;

              Jason Mews or Chris Rock as Spock?
              Kevin Smith or Ben Affleck as Scotty?
              Jennifer Garner or Joey Lauren Adams as the computer?

              or:

              Ben Afflek as Spock?
              Kevin Smith as Scotty? (that one sticks in my mind)
              Chris Rock as the computer?

                Another point.. the Shatner tradition would almost preclude hiring an actor who is actually good. Gotta have an over-the-top primadonna.

                    Neh...the spectacle of Jason Mews struggling to contain himself would be a scream

                    On a more serious note; lots of rumors that it will be a grittier, more grounded version much like "Batman Begins". That makes me think of the TOS episode "Balance of Terror", which for me is one of the best of the bunch.

                      I can't 'see' Damon as Kirk, but I certainly think he has enough talent to do so. He just hasn't played a character that I can really associate with being similar to Kirk.

                        Margie came up with a casting suggestion;

                        Spock: Matthew Lilard

                          Hey, Lillard could work, maybe. He's tall and thin and a little geeky-looking in a Spock-ish kind of way.

                            Jason Mews as Spock?

                              Back to Matthew Lilard for a minute. After searching around I found this B&W pic of him with a serious face (NOT easy to do!);

                              After a bit of very rough work in PhotoImpact 11 I came up with LilardSpock;
