Yes, modern torpedoe work like this: They detonate under the ship, because apparently detonating against the ship's armored hull would result in a far smaller hole, if any. I once saw a stupid "documentary" about the german marine, and their training torpedoes just flash very very brightly when "detonating", to simulate destruction of a ship. They're then towed aboard to be re-used, because they cost millions.
