By 50 they tend to have everything they need, so you have two choices:
1. As Brian suggested, what have they lost?
2. What can they do?
As wigs, corsets and penile implants aren't generally well received, you may be better off with an experience.
Hot air ballooning, drive a fast car, weekend away etc etc. There are lots of sites specialising in this.

I have several significant events for my parents coming up: Mum retires at the end of Jan (still only 59 though), parents 40th anniversay at end of March and Dad's 60th a day later. They are celebrating big-time with a cruise around NZ, so I won't be getting them a trip, but not sure what else yet either.FT.Comment

That's quite ironic because they just bought a Fuji S5700, which was great in principle and seems to keep them happy but I'd be very dissappointed with the picture quality.
