    "Star Trek" release changed....

    to May 8, 2009 instead of Christmas 2008.

    JJ Abrams wants the film positioned as a "summer blockbuster", not a Christmas flick up against horsesh*t like the "Fame" remake and Adam Sandler's "Bedtime Stories".

    The May date has it in a slot for a 2-3 week run with no serious competition.

              I would think the opposite. Putting it in the summertime means he thinks it will have a broad appeal, especailly among the young out-of-school moviegoers.

                  Exactly. Summer is prime-time for adventure films because the kids are out of school for 3 months and word of mouth can better drive multiple viewings. At Christmas they release films that'll have a 2-3 week shelf life, roughly the length of the Christmas->New Years school break.
