    Mermaid: A Twist On The Classic Tale (201x)

    Writing: Carolyn Turgeon (book), a dark re-imagining of Hans Christian Andersen's The Little Mermaid; Shana Feste (screenplay)

    Synopsis: The story gets its point of view shifted and the tone is definitely not Disney. It centers on a princess who, in order to save her ravaged kingdom, sets out on a dangerous journey to marry the prince of her rival kingdom, not knowing that a beautiful mermaid has fallen for the same man and has sacrificed everything to be with him.

      As I recall, Anderson's original little mermaid was pretty dark to begin with. (Spoiler she dies at the end but becomes transformed into a sky-fairie.)

          That it was. A friend of my wife has read the novel this new movie is based on and apparently it is even darker than the original story.
