    It may not be possible to travel back in time, but seeing stars and galaxies as they looked millions or even billions of years ago is no problem thanks to telescopes, the closest thing we have to time machines.


    This article gave me a chuckle. Those are some big arse telescopes. I think the astronomy world is having a pissing match at the moment. These don't even include the space telescopes being planned either.

    We start with the Giant Magellan Telescope with 24.5 meters worth of mirror. Planned to go up in Chile in 2018.

    Then we go the Thirty Meter Telescope in Hawaii...the name kind of gives away the size. Also slated for 2018.

    And last, but not least, the Europeans don't think CERN was enough to flex their scientific muscle, and the strength of the Euro, so they are building a 42 meter telescope; aptly named The European Extremely Large Telescope. No site picked yet.
