    Hi

    I was watching an edition of Wale Wars on discovery tonight and last.

    The Japanese deployed an LRAD system to deter the attack boats, and the protesters helicopter which was filming and directing the ribs.

    Not a discussion on the morality of either the whaling in a wale sanctuary or the protesters, rather on the LRAD as a device.

    Seems at first the protesters were scared off by it - though no one was injured - the protesters claimed it ran at a range of settings - from loud to f**king loud...

    on the second day though, the whalers attacked the main ship, and the ribs from from 50 meters, with no real effect, other than being annoying.

    Obviously commercial versions would not have the power of military ones - but I would have expected it to work to an extent at 50m???

    The dish used was around 1.5 meters...

    Is it totally useless? The protesters had simple foam earpieces, made from a matress...

    Question - has anyone experienced such a thing in R/L? I heard it was used during the wall st protests...

      LRAD was present but not used by NYPD vs. Occupy Wall Street.

      The mil-spec version is much more powerful, and yes the civilian version can be mitigated by ear coverings & shooting ear protection but not 100% - you can bet some cochlear hair cells were lost.

      Yes - I've heard one at about 10% @150 meters, and trust me you don't want to.

      The next step up is ADS - the Active Denial System. It uses 95 GHz microwaves to activate every heat & pain receptor in your skin to a range of over 700 meters, even through thick clothing.

          Fine wire mesh undergarments.
          The microwaves shouldn't be able to penetrate.

          Might get hot itself though.

                          You'll want a helmet much like the one they use for fencing.
                          I do wonder (if possible) what will happen if those waves are reflected back by some passive device...
