Mandrake 8.1 and troublesome samba

Felt like a little fun and so I retuned to this problem.
Browsing my Winxp network still doesn't work . The following happen.

If I click on the Local area network under Konquerer I get the message cannot connect host to local host.
If I enter smb//jon I can see the windows folders but if I click on them nothing is visable. However I no longer get asked for a password.

I've set the smbconf file with the following entries.

Workgroup = kasper
server string = Linux

uncommented the password lines set browsable to yes disabled guest and set the smbpasswd.

I can see my machine under xp and can connect to the folders. However it doesn't work in reverse.

I tried installing the wizards from Cd and although they think they have installed they don't run. Typical linux. There isn't any error messages.

At the moment I'm downloading the samba trouble shooting guide.

This is a classic example why linux isn't yet ready for the masses as the changes I'd done in the samba file I've already done using the gui tools available.

Some suggestions

First of all, try using the command line smbclient to obtain a connection. If you can't using that, then your samba configuration is borked (is your network using WINS name resolution by any chance)

An example command line would be:

smbclient -W kaspar -U Administrator '\\WINXP\SHARE'

(Don't forget the single quotes, otherwise the command will get mangled by the shell and won't work)

When you can make a connection via smbclient, You samba configuration should be correct. Now enter the KDE Control Center, and select the network-> Windows Shares configuration item from the index on the left hand side of the window. Set the relevent username/password you want to connect to winxp boxes with. It then should work :-)

If you can't get smbclient to connect to the winxp box, then try upgrading your samba to the latest version. MS may have broken something in SMB again

Who said linux was ready for the masses? Tech magizines and OS zealots ussually have no clue about linux and what a user wants/needs, so I suggest you don't listen to them Linux is really about learning about computers and having some fun/ getting some work done on the side

I don't listen to the mags although a lot of people who use Linux do push it as the alternative easy to use os. This fine when it works but when it doesn't and you have drop into the command line this is where most people will switch off and get completly lost.
I'm not using wins and I'll give your suggestion a try sometime later. I wouldn't be surprised if samba config is borked as you said. The question is how do you unbork it.

A classic case of missing the wood for the trees

Linux is the sort of system that fits together rather well and appears pretty simple to those seasoned in its use, but requires a lot of time to learn and is quite difficult to initially get.

I like linux due to its high performace, good (but not perfect) stability, and its excellent flexibility.

The best way to unbork a samba configuration is to start with the sample configuration, and then go through it, setting it up the way you want it. You can get a significant amount of help about this with the command

man smb.conf

Still no go. Tried your command however this didn't do anything and just left me at the command prompt.
However looking at the samba document this gave me another command to try can't remember which now and this asked for my password and I was able to see the shares in the shell window.
However using the knoquer browser I can still only see the directories which are either empty or if not will be empty when I do a refresh.
Looks like the networking is total screwed.
I also installed a webwin a graphical interface for smbclient and of course although this installed okay it didn't provide any links or any clue to where to run the damn thing from. Typical.
There is a later version of samba around is there a version in rpm format as I can't find one?

Try http://rpmfind.net You might have to upgrade some of your rpm's to cooker. That's what I always did in Mandrake 8.1, but everyonce in a while I'd get a bad package that would just screw everything up. Good luck.
