  • Which Linux distribution do you use?

As there has been so much talk of different distributions, I wanted to know which ones are the most popular. If these are not enough, please go to Linux Online.

I use Gentoo linux as much as i can and Redhat when that's not practical, (ie i want a quick setup using more obscure hardware/install options).
You wanna piece of me? here, *crunch*, o.k. not _that_ bit.

RH 7.1, but its more or less production so I can't play with it too much, when I get that new 4th 'puter then I'll migrate one of the existing to a different flavour of *nix and play

I run Debian Sid on my desktop and mandrake 8.2 on my server. I'd run Debian on my server as well, but I didn't want to have to spend too long setting it up, with Mandrake it just installed, I added a few things here and there, and now it's working great.

I tried FreeBSD out, version 4.5. It PUKED whenever I'd try to install the sound module for my Sblive. Possibly because I have the SBLive 5.1, not sure. But it would lock solid. Good thing I still have linux installed :-)

So all you need is to add "device pcm" to your kernel configuration file. After rebooting you probably will be able to see something linke this:

                    # dmesg | grep pcm
                    pcm0: <SB16 DSP 4.11> on sbc0

If the previous command returned a pcm device (pcm0, pcm1 etc.) then you must su and:

                    # cd /dev
                    # sh MAKEDEV snd0

(if pcm1, replace sdn0 with snd1). Good luch
