Kind of funny comparison....

This just occured to me as being rather humorous. People keep demanding win9x drivers for the Parhelia, but you never hear anyone demand that they release a driver for XFree86 3.3.x. I just wish Matrox would hurry up and release the Parhelia driver. I resorted to installing my Matrox Millenium 2 for linux only (which means I have to go into the Bios everytime that I want to change OS's and modify the primary video card from AGP to PCI.)

Seriously, that's not a very good comparison. There are no legacy XFree86 3.x apps that won't run on XFree86 4. And it's not like there's a hefty upgrade fee involved in going from 3.x to 4.x

And it's not like 4.x is much slower/larger/resource-hungry than 3.x either. Sure there are a lot of new features in 4.x, but most are things which are genuinely useful, were lacking in 3.x, and can be turned off anyway if you really don't want. The best reason to run 3.x is if you have old hardware which hasn't had drivers ported to 4.x.

That was my point exactly, if you have older hardware that doesn't have drivers ported to 4.x And besides, that's why I said <i>funny</i> comparison. Only time so far that I'd seen to run 3.3.x instead of 4.x is on my laptop which hated 4.2 that was installed with Mandrake 8.2 (luckily I found they had included the driver from 4.1 that works great with the Trident chipset that's in it.) But really, most applications will run in WindowsXP anyhow, the worse part about not having Parhelia drivers for Win9x is indeed the upgrade costs of the OS. Some games have problems with XP as well, but that's what Emulators are for :-)

Yes, I understood that. But it still doesn't apply, since the drivers that are missing in 4.x is not a reason to run 3.x with the Parhelia, as there is no cost involved för the enduser in upgrading to 4.x.

To quote myself. I <i>did</i> say that. I say out with the old in with the new! Besides you know somewhere out there, there is someone who still runs X 3.3.x because either they don't have an upgrade route or they work in a place that doesn't need to be upgraded past what they have. Technophobes and Neophobes are such fun people....

As a side note, I'd much rather see drivers for BeOS or QNX than for Win9x, just because those are OS's that are kind of fun to play around with. I don't think that'll happen though.

I was really saddened when Be went under.

I actually downloaded BeOS the other day (didn't have a machine capable of running it when it was actually alive), but it wouldn't boot, and the only way I could install and run it was in 'virtual drive under Windows' mode. Any idea how you can install it in its own partition once you've got this far?

Yes.

1. Perpare an empty drive. (need to be primary partition IIRC)
2. Boot into BeOS
3. Mount that empty drive
4. Format it with Be FileSystem
5. Run Installer (an bundle application)
6. Point to that mounted drive and your existing BeOS will be copied to there

That is assuming that you are using Pe.
Check out the leaked Dano (BeOS 6) as well. Don't ask how to get it in this forum though

By the way, you might need to apply kernel patch since you are using AMD. And I'm not sure if your SCSI controler would work under BeOS. Be sure to download all the G400 drivers/utils from bebits! You can even have dualhead!
