Is there a light app that can read OpenOffice files?

I use OpenOffice.org on my main computer and like to use their native format, because it's sexy. My laptop though isn't even close to being powerful enough to run OpenOffice.org. So is there any programs out there that can at least read OpenOffice.org Writer files and run on a P100 w/ 40MB of RAM? Couldn't find any info about this on Abiword's website.

My thoughts are..... why is it that everyone has to create their own doc format? Can't we all just find a nice standard. Pictures at least have gotten down to pretty much 3 standard file formats (PNG, JPG, GIF) why can't we get down to ONE doc format that compresses itself and does all the frills? AND be 100% cross-platform compatible.

That could be Adobe's PDF, very nice for distribution (read-only), no Distiller involved...

As for native OpenOffice docs, it could be nice if they would release a small, memory efficient viewer for their file-types (Hint!, hint)

Common format? Sure, save it to rtf. Works pretty well, and anybody can read it.

That's why I want to use OpenOffice's native format, because it is an XML document. It shouldn't be that hard to make that a common format among open source apps because only some code porting is required (okay I'm making that sound a bit easier than done). Hopefully an Abiword developer or someone is in the process. Until then I guess it'll be save-as when I need to copy from system to system.

RTF is what I tell everyone to use Unfortunately most everyone uses MS Word and saves it as .doc. Which MANY Word Processors use the .doc file extension, but that doesn't mean that they're all compatible. PDF would be a nice standard format, if Acrobat and other programs used to create PDF files weren't so freakin' expensive!

AFAIK OO.org, Abi, KOffice and some others are working towards a common standard. Plus, MS Office 11 will introduce XML file format as default.

Abiword will work with OO.org files (I think, at least I assume that's what the Sun's Open Writer document importer does) It's a plugin for Abiword (apt-get install abiword-plugins) if you're running debian (might be just an unstable package)
