How do I install the Parhelia drivers on Lycoris Linux?

I choose this distro because it's easy to use and reminds me of XP...I've also got nothing better to do How do I install the damn drivers though? I've run the script, it says something like it has to recompile the drivers for my current kernel version and theoretically finishes OK. I restarted X, restarted the computer, nothing happened, I'm still stuck in shitty VGA rez. It hasn't appeared in the vidcards that I can manually add list either...I don't really know my way around Linux, so some help would be appreciated. This distro has XFree 4.2.1, if that matters...

what version of gcc does it have? that's the real trick to getting the linux drivers working. Other than that, use emacs (that's pretty standard as an install on most distros) or whatever your favorite text editor is. And modify /etc/X11/XF86Config-4 so that the "Driver" is "mtx". That's a big part of it....

I think i improperly said that "I don't really know my way around Linux", a better formula is "I don't know shit about Linux"...is there any distro in which this will work just by running the script? I've also checked out Lindows 2.0 (a really nice piece of work by the way-at least from this Microsuxer's point of view) and the script didn't work there either...actually it might be the reason why that OS isn't booting anymore I mean come on, do I really have to go down and dirty just to install a driver?!

read my post about installing Debian 3.0. Debian isn't exactly the most user-friendly version of Linux, but it gets the job done. Most of the RedHat based distros use GCC 2.96 or GCC 3.2, you're in luck though, at least according to www.distrowatch.com, lycoris uses GCC 2.95. You've been able to run the install script, and if it said it compiled ok, then the next trick is to 'modprobe agpgart' then 'modprobe mtx'. If you've already modified /etc/X11/XF86Config-4 so that the driver is 'mtx' then you should be able to load it up. I've got this weekend free, if you need some help. I should be able to get it working, pretty easily. I'll check back here every so often and you can always email me. Good luck.

Well I've tried my luck with Lindows again...it's Debian based so I followed your instructions in the other topic...I changed the two settings in XF86Config-4, but the modprobe mtx command says it can't locate the module. After a restart the driver mtx remained in the XF86 file, but I still don't have the extra resolution and refresh rate options...Lindows has gcc 2.95 as well. modprobe agpgart doesn't seem to do/say anything.

if modprobe agpgart doesnt say anything that's a good sign. try lsmod do see what modules are loaded.

Tried it and it shows that AGP Gart is loaded (though it says "unused" on the right), not sign of the MTX drivers though....what next?

After you have ran the install.sh that comes with the matrox drivers, it should have placed the module in '/lib/modules/{kernel version}/kernel/drivers/video/mtx.o' Then you'd have to 'insmod mtx' before you open up XWindows. (Or you can just modify /etc/modules and add on two seperate lines agpgart, and mtx.)

Hmm, I didn't pay attention to this message: "Installing mtx.o...no compiled mtx.o available" (that's what it says when it's supposed to install the Matrox Kernel Module...so I guess that is my problem...how do I get around it? BTW, do you have an Audigy or know how to properly install the opensource Creative drivers? Thanx for the help so far

Unfortunately, I don't have an Audigy, I have a SBLive (it uses the same core driver, but I believe there is a patch to make it work for the audigy).

Try to 'cd ~/mtxdrivers/kernel/src' and type 'make' and then 'make install' That should create the mtx.o driver and put it in the right place.

As a side note, mtx.o loads automatically when I load up X because it is linked to the mtx_drv.o.

Looks like you need to install the software off of the dev CD. I was going to download it and try it out myself, but it seems that all the mirrors out there either don't work, or are slow as hell.

No, actually Lindows doesn't have it...but no matter, I've just downloaded a real-deal distro (Redhat 8.0) and will hopefully have more luck. Oh, and in the latest versions of both Lycoris and Lindows, my Audigy works...yey!
