I finally got my G400 exactly the way I want it.

Dual 1280x960 framebuffer consoles and dualhead 1280x960 X display, one Hitachi 21" at 85Hz and a Sony 21" at 75Hz. Mmmmm-mmmm.

FWIW, here's my modeline for the second head:
ModeLine "1280x960" 135.00 1280 1376 1488 1800 960 961 964 1000 +HSync +VSync

135Mhz is the max pixel clock for the second head on the G400. X defaults to 108MHz on the second head which is only 60Hz. 135MHz gives 1280x960@75Hz.

Is it possible to run the second head at 1280x1024? Last time i checked, I seem to remember a 1024x768 limit... but if i can do 1280x1024, it may be time for me to buy a second monitor....

Hi,

I don't know about 1280x1024.. the reason I use 1280x960 is because I prefer the 4:3 aspect over 5:4. However, it would stand to reason that as long as the pixel clock doesn't exceed the maximum, you would be fine. e.g., 1280x1024 @ 70Hz should be do-able.
