  • Red Hat 9 cannot find network card

Now this si the machine at home not work.

According to XP the network card is an Intel Pro/1000 network card. The same card is listed under Red hat but it cannot detect it. Now the machine is running in apic mode under the bios is this messing it up???

Is this the 1000CT you mentioned in another thread?

Unless I'm having a memory lapse I pretty sure I haven't mentioned it all before now. I've got a feeling RH hasn't installed in apic mode. If it hasn't I've probably missed it during setup. Anyway I'm off to bed. Another challenge for another day.

Now sometime I've got to find the driver for the Intel 1000 CT network card for my home machine. Whats the betting there isn't one.

Yeh okay you got me. I found one on the Intel page but then won't install. Cannot find Kernal error message. The one on Redhat didn't work but I thought it was worth trying the Intel one.
One reason why I think RH9 isn't apic mode is that it listed only 15 irq's for the card. None of which worked of course.

Ok. The thing is, I couldn't find any mention of 1000CT on either Intel's site or in the documentation for the driver in the Linux kernel. If it's a really new card, it may be that it just isn't supported yet.

Have you tried manually inserting the e1000 module?
            If not, do a
            Code:
            modprobe e1000
and check what it says in your dmesg and, if separate, syslog.

Funny modprobe doesn't work under the Su command so logged on as root and ran it again

              init_mod no such device
Hint invalid i/o or irq check syslog for possible further details.

No referance at all under syslog.

What does "lspci -v" say about the card?

You like being cruel don't you.
                  Another reboot coming up.
                  Hold your horses.
By the way if you search for intel 82547ei (The description in motherboard man) it has drivers for RH 8 on it's site.

Ahh.. 82547. The drivers bundled with the standard Linux kernel supports 82540-82546

Not even Intels own drivers seems to support the 82547: readme.txt

But I suppose it couldn't hurt to try the driver anyway, just to be sure: driver

Where did you find the driver for Redhat 8?

Just did a search for the model number in the msi model and came up with a 875 based server board. So i tried that and it said incorrect kernal. That stopped me striaght away.
Found another problem with the motherbaord which isn't linux related which I'll have to investigate first.

Typical can't find any drivers for the onboard card that work. What a surprise. Just fitted an old 3com card I've got lying about and that worked as oon as I deleted the old network card profile.
Downloading the updates hopefuly the new kernal will reconise the onboard card.

Hurrah the new kernal found the onboard network card. The only hiccup was on startup when it failed to activate the card.
Now I only need ATI to release, if they haven't since I last looked, drivers for the 9800 Pro.

Doh looks like the samba client didn't get installed on the inital install possible due to non detection of the network card. RH in it's new user friendly system doesn't seem to have a easy way too install it. Looks like I'll have search each cd until I find it.
