Sorry I've just updated my lost post.

If it uses the orginal working config Domain master cannot be found.

Under the root the config is labeled default samba and works.

If I change the settings under non root to match root it says domain master cannot be found.

With the orginal settings it compalins the Xp machine cannot be found which is true as the name is wrong. So I corrected that. I can ping it via netbios name or ip by the way.

Looking under XP there hasn't been an election so the master browser is the same.

Can you try running "smbclient -L xp-machine" as a non-root user?

Done that already and interestingly it says it cannot connect under either. From that I smell I rat. A strange one at that.

After the cider has cleared and I made changes reflecting the change of ip address of the driver update.

Saturday being another day of course xsmbrowser decides to half work.
smbclient now works perfectly as root and none root.

Fixed it after persuading xsmbrowser to pick up the default settings it was using as root.
So I must have been lucky that it worked before.
