  • lirc Kernel 2.4.20 Debian unstable.

    Anyone been able to get this to install? I'm currently using kernel-image-2.4.20-5-686_2.4.20-10 and I have the kernel-source and kernel-headers packages installed as well. lirc-modules-sources is also installed. Now when I try to make-kpkg modules_image like it says, it craps out and says ;

    # Add here commands to install the package into debian/lirc-modules.
    /usr/bin/make install prefix=/usr/src/modules/lirc/debian/lirc-modules-2.4.20
    make[2]: Entering directory `/usr/src/modules/lirc'
    cut: modules/*.o.KVERS: No such file or directory
    make[2]: *** [install] Error 1
    make[2]: Leaving directory `/usr/src/modules/lirc'
    make[1]: *** [install] Error 2
    make[1]: Leaving directory `/usr/src/modules/lirc'
    Module /usr/src/modules/lirc failed.
    Hit return to Continue

    Any help would be greatly appreciated. (or better yet, if anyone has the .deb already compiled for this kernel, perhaps I could just download it from there. I looked all over the net and couldnt' find a pre-compiled one that was later than 2.4.20-pre4

    My mistake, it looks like I don't need the lirc. At least I don't think so. What I'm trying to do, is get my Livedrive remote to work in linux. (Audigy 2 Platinum). I downloaded the Livetools and compiled them. It comes with an xmms plugin for it, but of course after I compiled it and installed it, I selected the xmms plugin and xmms happily crashed. Anyone know of a way to use just the plain lircd with this, so that I can quite happily use my remote with Zinf, Xawtv, etc.

    Edit: It looks like it uses the midi device for the remote. But when I run it, it sits there quietly, then when I ctrl-c it says;

    WARNING: SIGINT signal received.
    ERROR: Unable to open device '/dev/midi' in init_raw_device
    ERROR: Aborting due to errors in init_device().

    Any ideas?

          Yes that fine operating system XP where 99% of stuff works on it.
          Manufacturers write drivers for it. If you want to install a program you click on setup and away you go.

            Odd, I can install out of a repository of 1900+ packages with a simple click and go. It's called Debian.

            As far as drivers being written for it, ask GURM, Creative's drivers aren't exactly the best in the world. I had to totally re-install windows because of upgrading my sound card.

              Point is any new hardware has drivers written for windoze from the off. Trying to find linux drivers in most cases impossible so you're waiting for open source community to come up wth them.

                Yeah, but a lot of people don't buy the latest hardware because of incompatibilities, flaws, etc.

                Tell me, you going to upgrade to 'longhorn' when it's released? I sure as hell am not. WinXp is the last Microsoft operating system I'll ever use.

                For the most part everything I have works in linux flawlessly. I only really use Windows to play games, and to use the Yahoo webcam feature (which if I spent the time, I could get to work in linux as well.) Granted with Linux you usually have to spend more time getting certain things to work than in Windows. But then again once you have everything set up (at least in my opinion) a linux desktop is just easier to use and feels more organized.

                  Besides, if hardware manufacturers actually made their own linux drivers, we'd probably have to reboot everytime we installed something Or Installed software, or did a security update only time you really have to reboot linux is if you change kernels.

                    Yeh I'll probably get Longhorn becuase I'll get it for free. Also becuase of my job I'll need to know it.
                    I think you summed up the Linux problem nicely. You need to spend time getting it to work properly. It's a hobbiest desktop at the moment.
