• Jammrock journey's into the world of Linux!

I downloaded Red Hat 9 last night and just finished installing it on my laptop ... it's my first time using Linux. Pretty nice so far. The install when smoothly with no trouble. I just used all the standard install options. I'll dink with other stuff later.

Anyone have some good resourses on how to use some of the more advanced features in Linux?

That depends on what kind of advanced features you are talking about. Here are some general resources though.

I've found that the documentation RedHat has written is fairly good, you can get it at http://www.redhat.com/docs/manuals/linux/

A good book online is Rute - Rute User's Tutorial and Exposition

The Linux Documentation Project has lots of resources. Sometimes the HOWTO's assume too much and can be out of date though. Their guides seem to be pretty good though.

Edit: Ack, forgot closing quote in an <a> tag, trashed a third of my post

Now if I can only get the SB Extigy drivers to compile and install...

        Try screwing w/ the makefiles...

Ok, if you're using a tar file, try this...(note: I'm not totally sure what this will do, or if it will work)...

./configure <--i assume it runs the "configure" program in the current directory. I guess it sets variables a certain way to be compiled.

make <--builds the program you want to install?

make install <--builds the installer program???

dZeus and I have been dinking with the makefile and make command for a while, but the Make keeps giving errors and the compile fails. Drivers seem to be the one major tough spot in Linux... at least for me.

On http://www.cs.umass.edu/~cochran/ which appears to be the main page for the linux extigy driver, there is a comment about RedHat 9 and a workaround that is documented in the makefile. Have you seen/tried that yet?

Yeah, ditto. I've had similar issues.

Although you aren't using gentoo, the gentoo forums can be extremely useful. Ever since I started using gentoo, and thus their forum, I've only had to look up 2 questions in google. Everything else I did a forum search and found someone else with my problem and solutions. Also check out the Documentation & Tips section, cause most things apply to any flavor of Linux.

Also I believe that Alsa supports the Extigy.
