Xfree 4.3 font problem

I got my linux install near perfect, so I thought I would tart it up a bit by using some better fonts....bad move

While in the font configuarion, screen I noticed a button saying "get windows fonts", whic I thought sounded like a nice feature....bad move #2

After allowing it to find and retrieve all the windows, 50% of my windows(all my text editers ) fonts tunred into little boxes...

Obviously "get windows fonts" means "replace all readable fonts with gibberish", a very easy misinterpretation to make

So I checked the font list, It seemed to me the marlett font was probaly the culprit...so I diecded to uninstall it...problem uninstall just list font package paths etc...so I guessed at which one was probably the right one...BAD move #3. now 90% of my font are little boxes...feck

Rebooted to see if it would autmagically fix itself, no dice went back and had another shot at removing the dodgy font...bad move #4 and 5...thinking a reboot may get the changes to work...I shutdown x and then reboot.

know I get the message cannot find 'fixed' font, after the x-erver aborts(no more X)...the font server is running It just can't find some 'fixed' font...

So ihave gone through and refreshed/reinstalled all likely font files to no avail (all xfree, western...etc)

Anyone know how to fix this or which rpm/package contains the default 'fixed' font...

The worse thing about this is over the last 7 years I have done this on at least 2 other occasions...ehy don't they call the button "santity deprivation control", that makes more sense

Please help me, otherwise I am going to have to reinstall the whole kit and kaboodle just because of some scummy font

I would suggest trying to uninstall then re-install the XFree86-100dpi-fonts and the XFree86-75dpi-fonts packages. Those usually have the fixed fonts in them. Good luck.

Edit: Might also be in the base XFree86 package. I'll look more into it when I get home from work. I'm kind of pressed for time now.... lousy work

I have already done both XFree86-100dpi/75 and a couple of base Xfree packages, but there is quite a few to choose from

I have been doing "rpm -e --nodeps " and then a urpmi to install it (mandrakes funky smart/fuzzy rpm installer) because they all have dependecies, but I am not sure that works properly?

What do you get if you run chkfontpath? If madrake doesn't have it what about the contents of /etc/X11/fs/config? I think you probably inadvertantly removed all of the directories from the font search path.

I did the chkfontpath, it had a list that was consistant with what I thought should have been required, and the same with /etc/X11/fs/config...?

Thanks for the help, but it just is not worth the time to track down since I know the "correct formulae" to get it all back up in no time and give me the chance to change to resierf FS as well,

mandrake 9.1 + nforce 2 = vanilla 2.4.22 kernel + supermount patch...

I just won't try to get windows fonts again(until I forget...again)

Hmmm. On earlier versions of Mandrake I never had a problem with that (up to 8.2) Haven't tried it since 9.x as now I have Linux/freebsd/qnx/anything else on a separate HD and do not allow them access to my XP drive. May try it later as I have Mandrake 9.2 RC1 installed.

Denty, you are right, Mandrake 8.2 was great, everything woked out of the box...in fact it played rtcw faster than windows (geforce 1).

But 9.0 and 9.1 have been plagued with apic and acpi problems, I think its more to the 2.4.21 kernel they are both based on..

But for me and quite a few other the combination of 9.1 with 2.4.22 works a treat..I am very happy with it (after months of tweaking/cursing).

The 9.2 rc1 is still based on 2.4.21 kernel so that has ruled it out for me...

However since you have an sis based board you probably won't have deal with the krap I had to go through..

Its a bit weird, NV claims linux support and has linux drivers (which are very limited), yet I have never seen SIS claim linux support but they usually work without any additonal drivers staright out if the box!!!!
