  • kernel 2.6, devfs and video

I'm a bit confused about where devices are supposed to be with 2.6 and devfs.

It looks like sound stuff is now in /dev/snd/, but where is /dev/video now? I ran a MAKEDEV to create /dev/video0, but still can't my Marvel G200 to load into it. So am I not getting the video to work or should I am I using the wrong device name?

Sorry I'm not giving much info, but I've been messing with this for 4 hours and it's 5 am and my brain is mush.

I usually love to tinker with new things, like kernels, etc. But lately I've come to the conclusion that if it's not broken don't try to fix it. I am currently running Debian Sid with the 2.4.20-3-686 kernel, and the assorted packages built for that (alsa-modules being the key one) and haven't tried to upgrade it quite yet.... mainly because Ihave all my devices working for once. Even the remote control for my Audigy 2 Platinum is working properly (though with that I do need to hack around the init files so it boots up working, rather than having to manually run lircd -H livedrive_midi.... everytime..)

With DevFS shouldn't it automatically create the device anyhow? Once you load the module up for the Marvel G200, the device should be automagically created.

Yeah, I think that is the main point with devfs, to auto create devices, so maybe I'm just missing something. All the G200 docs are pretty outdated, so I'm stumbling around trying to figure out what does and does not apply.

2.6 so far has been good to me though. Joystick support for my gamepads work right out of the box, ALSA in kernel seems easier to deal with then downlading separate drivers and same with DRI.

After further reading it looks like video capture isn't possible in 2.6 kernel until drivers are rewritten.

That sucks. I do agree though that having Alsa inside the kernel is really nice. It'll be really nice once 2.6 is out of testing and gets integrated into the major distros. Then SCO can go fly a kite, as they've already said time and again that the 'offending code' is not in 2.6 at all.
