  • need help to repair my hostname

    Hi guys.

I've got a hostname problem with my server. I don't really know if it's something that i miscompiled or a script that i've broken but my hostname doesn't get set... so some of my services don't start as they should i've got to set my hostname by hand at each reboot and that a little annoying.

I've used an old redhat 6.2 as the basesystem and upgraded it to the lastest glibc, kernel, gcc ... but in the meanwile i might had broke something.

I've traced out the init scripts and found that rc.sysinit read /etc/sysconfig/networks. At first i thought it was that part of the script that broke but now.... i really don't beleave it since my lan card get's configured properly with it's static ip and all but the hostname contained in it doesn't.

I'm starting to think that it might be login or bash that unset 'em... can this be possible?

Any other thing that i might check out or recompile to correct this issue?

I am a bit rusty on some console stuff, but can you use netconf to fix it?

If i remember correctly netconf is a module of linuxconf. Anyway i've checked with linuxconf and all the things were set in the pannel.... i mean the configs were there.... but wouldn't get set once rebooted.

I guess it's more or less something in a library or in an app. but i recompiled so much things that i've got no idea of what could be the source of it.

The thing that leads me to beleave that is that the config file /etc/sysconfig/network gets loaded. Then in the rc.sysinit it set the hostname. I clearly see the call while it boot... everything is fine upto there. Once that script dies to start those in rc3.d the hostname is unset.... no idea why only this one. I've event tryed to add a S01hostname in my rc3.d to force it... if worked as long as it ran... but after that once again it was unset.

I've tryed to re-compile & install the lastest PAM and net-utils (to have the newest hostname) tonight. It seem's to work.... but since i've installed both before rebooting the system i've got no idea which one was the problem. I'll wait 2-3 days to be absolutely sure that it's solved, but it seem's to work for now.

I kind of have the same thing happening with Mandrake 9.1, though it isn't that any of my services don't work.... but it always gives me some weird hostname, and I kept using the hostname command to change it, but it never saved the setting. Probably if I ever get bored one weekend, I'm going to try to set up a different distro as my router/webserver/mailserver. Any suggestions on an easy distro to do this with? (preferably debian based, since I know it quite well.)

I've ran a couple of test on my pc and it really seem's that it was a badly configured PAM. Seem's that PAM was a need to be compiled with global key's to work correctly. Everything work's perfectly now.

            Thanks for the help Marshmallowman.
