  • Redhat Linux going away?

    Got this email from RedHat:

    Dear you,

Thank you for being a Red Hat Network customer.

This e-mail provides you with important information about the upcoming
discontinuation of Red Hat Linux, and resources to assist you with your
migration to another Red Hat solution.

As previously communicated, Red Hat will discontinue maintenance and
errata support for Red Hat Linux 7.1, 7.2, 7.3 and 8.0 as of December
31, 2003. Red Hat will discontinue maintenance and errata support for
Red Hat Linux 9 as of April 30, 2004. Red Hat does not plan to release
another product in the Red Hat Linux line.

With the recent announcement of Red Hat Enterprise Linux v.3, you'll
find migrating to Enterprise Linux appealing. We understand
that transitioning to another Red Hat solution requires careful planning
and implementation. We have created a migration plan for Red Hat Network
customers to help make the transition as simple and seamless as
    possible. Details:

    ****************
If you purchase Red Hat Enterprise Linux WS or ES Basic before February
28, 2004, you will receive 50% off the price for two years.[*] (That's two
years for the price of one.)

    ****************
In addition, we have created a Red Hat Linux Migration Resource Center
to address your migration planning and other questions, such as:

    * What are best practices for implementing the migration to Red Hat
    Enterprise Linux?

    * Are there other migration alternatives?

    * How do I purchase Red Hat Enterprise Linux WS or ES Basic at the price
    above?

    * What if my paid subscription to RHN extends past April 30, 2004?

    ****************

Find out more about your migration options with product comparisons,
whitepapers and documentation at the Red Hat Linux Migration Resource
    Center:

Upgrade to the latest major release, convert from other Linux distributions, or refactor from a non-Linux operating system.

Or read the FAQ written especially for Red Hat Network customers:

Access Red Hat’s knowledge, guidance, and support through your subscription.

    Sincerely,

    Red Hat, Inc.

[*] Limit 10 units. Higher volume purchase inquiries should contact a
regional Red Hat sales representative. Contact numbers available at

Yes, that's right, Red Hat as you know it is going away. They're only going to be producing the Enterprise (i.e. mucho $$$$) version as of sometime soon. Red Hat For The Rest Of Us is now being called Fedora, and is more or less completely dissociated from the Red Hat company.
Blah blah blah nick blah blah confusion, blah blah blah blah frog.

Granted, RH was my first Distro (4.2), ever since I started using linux more and more, I stick with Debian. At least we know Debian won't go this route. I've tried just about all the RH versions, and haven't liked 'em (mainly due to RPM issues). This still sucks that the biggest linux distro is doing this....

The Parhelia drivers work wonderfully for my Debian install. Just because they say they are made for RH 9, doesn't mean you can't get them to work with any distro.

Not sure how the Suse situation turns out, it may continue to remain as normal hopefully.
And i have used matrox drivers in suse without any problems and suse use rpms more than redhat :0 itself i think

SuSE has a nice distro. There is ONE major complaint about it over RedHat..... The naming convention of their RPMs. I could never tell what version they are! they are named gnome-applets.rpm for instance, and nothing else. At least last I checked (around SuSE 7.3). That bugged the hell out of me. Debian is nice because all the packages are named with version then revision number.

For Example, gnome-applets_2.2.3-1_i386.deb, being the first release of the 2.2.3 version of Gnome Applets. Or gnome-applets_2.4.0-2_i386.deb being the 2nd revision of gnome applets version 2.4.0. Both for the i386 architecture. Of course with apt, you only need to know the package name anyhow, does the new SuSE's use apt?
