  • Mandrake 9.2

Just how easy/hard is an install of this? I only have dos and windows experience but want my second box on something else now.

Edit: I have seen the warnings about LG cd drives.

Pretty Easy for a Windows user.

Nice GUI, easy step-by-configuration...make sure you have your Dialup/PPoE settings handy if you have a Dialup Modem or ADSL: it will prompt you to configure the connections during setup.

Most LGE CD-RWs drives now have firmware updates that sidestep the issue. LGE is now working on testing with Linux.

Just installed it on my server. It's a dual 466 with 384mb of ram, and I will say that Gnome 2.4 is FAST as all hell on it. I'm quite impressed. Much faster than 2.2 was.

Hey leech - where did you get it?

9.1 is about.... 9.2 seems that you have to pay for it.... I dont have a problem with that - I just want to try before I buy....

I am looking for a move from RedHat (now its officially going)

I couldnt get debian 'sarge' to install - the CD installer seems messed up.... (cant find various modules....)

BTW your twin 466 - its not a BP6, by any chance? I have one of those, running the RedHat.... Its still great as a little server.....

nah...mandrake 9.2 is free to download, just say you will join later at the download page.

And search a few of the mirror sites they list, you will find the ISO's about 2 or 3 directories up from the distro ftp directory.

                      Not necessarily zero support.

You can still get access to support via the mailing list and bugzilla....

Man I just upgraded my brothers old mandrake 8.2 to 9.2.

I kid you not, I must have clicked the mouse 10 times at the most in the whole upgrade..feck that was sweet.

                        I LIKE IT !

I'll do a full install on my server/slave machine next and then its time to try an upgrade on my main machine (9.1->9.2)

Just go my DVD burner so I might try and put the CD's on to one DVD disk...anyone got anyhints onmaking bootable DVD's?

In short, YES. I am using the so called "RH9.0 Pro" drivers with Debian Sid. The only reason they call them RedHat drivers at all is because that's what most commercial programs are configured for. Basically it just has a binary for XFree86 versions 4.2.0, 4.2.1, 4.3.0. So if you have one of those (MDK9.2 comes with 4.3.0) then it'll work, because it compiles the mtx.o kernel module for you.

I haven't tried setting it up on MDK9.2 myself, but I'm sure someone here can help ya out. It shouldn't be much harder than 'urpmi kernel-source' or something like that.
