TH Independant Mode

    TH Independant Mode

    Can anyone who has tried this tell me what the max resolution and refresh rates are of each display. My guess is that the first two displays would be able to handle 2048x1536 85Hz and the third display would be limited to 1280x1024 85Hz.

    I don't have linux running on my P machine at the momment or else I would find out for myself.
    I should have bought an ATI.

    I haven't really played with that. I have all three displays set up as 1280x1024 @ (well, I'm not sure what the refresh rate is, would have to look... is that in xdpyinfo?)

      Finally got a working install of linux. It seems an early Epox nForce2 with P must be the worst platform to install linux on. I still only have 2 of my 6 USB ports working and lilo/grub are still returning 99s.

      Anyways, I got THI mode working and tried a bunch of settings and it looks like you can't set any screen's resolution above 1280x1024 when running in THI mode.
      I should have bought an ATI.

        As to usb ports , if they are usb 2.0 then make sure you are loading the ehci module.

          Anyone with a 256mb version of the Parhelia want to confirm if they can only reach 1280x1024x3? It would be based on the Video ram, wouldn't it?

            1280x1024x4x3 is only 15M (at 32-bit color). If you add 3 more buffers (for triple buffering and Z-buffer), you get 60M - in 3D mode...

            I doubt it's a memory limitation. The third head may not have the ability to go higher (other than TH, it's only used for video, and 1280x1024 is plenty for that).

            Do you have to have the same resolution in independent mode?

            If not, try setting heads 1 and 2 to 1600x1200 (or something) and set #3 to 1280. (this may pose problems with X, since it likes rectangular workspaces ...)

              After upgrading the kernel, I have got the rest of my usb ports to work with every device but my mouse. So it is not a big problem anymore.

              I think that the 1280x1024x3 limitation is in the driver, but it may be a hardware limitation. When trying L:800x600 C:1600x1200 R:800x600, X would lock up or return an error. When trying L:1024x768 C:1600x1200 R:1024x768, the center screen's resolution would be reset t o 1280x1024.

              If there was no driver limit in THI. You should be able to get above 1280x1024 with the first two displays and 1280x1024 on the last display. I am begining to wonder if the last display is really limited to 1280x1024.

              Maybe setting all three screens to such high resolutions would cause the card to exceed a hardware limitation (such as current draw from the AGP port), or maybe they don't want the card to compete with their MMS and QID cards.

                Don't take this as gospel, but I believe that in triplehead mode the Parhelia has one big frame buffer for all three displays. Which would mean that "triple-head independent" mode is actually merged mode, with the independent part being faked by the driver. That would go a long way to explain these problems/limitations.

                Is it possible to set different colour depths in THI mode? e.g. two screens at 32-bit and one at 16-bit (or maybe even 8-bit)?

                    No. Infact, the only thing that's "independant" about it is the possibility to use Xinerama (which in it self is a big plus when using 3 displays).
