  • Knoppix 3.3 rocks!

Yeah, so I'm using Knoppix 3.3 right now on my main rig and I'm VERY impressed. Though I have one major beef so far...it appears as if there is no root password? I've run passwd to change it, but it didn't "stick". Anyone know more about this?

Also, it appears to have trouble reading one of my partitions, but that may be an NTFS partition.

If your only harddrive is an NTFS then it definitely would not "stick". The problem is that by default, NTFS is read only. Since Microsoft isn't exactly forthcoming on the details of certain NTFS features, the code is for writing to an NTFS drive is experimental. Knoppix 3.4 should be out soon, there is a preview release of it floating around the net from what I've seen.

But yes, Knoppix does ROCK. Especially good if you need a rescue disk, or you just want to show off a kickass desktop to someone. I managed to switch a windows user

What are the advantages to 3.4?

Nah, my primary drive wasn't an NTFS drive, AFAIK.

Also, I saw that I could save my settings to a disk...how would I restore them?

3.4 also contains the 2.6.1 kernel. There is most likely other differences, but that is the main one.

As for NTFS, knoppix also contains Captive NTFS. Last time I tried it on a 3.2 release, it wouldn't work for me. Even when I pointed it directly at the DLLs, it couldn't find them. I haven't tried it with knoppix 3.4 yet. Maybe it will work better.

BTW, I haven't got started on adding Parhelia drivers to knoppix 3.4. Still need to clear off some HD space for the development partitions. Been busy getting my revo7.1, tv card, videolan, and dvds to work on my cel@550 server/multimedia computer. Would anyone know if you can easily rollback to a 2.4.x kernel after attempting to compile a 2.6.x kernel + extras. I don't want to risk a lot of down time if something goes wrong.
I should have bought an ATI.

That would be easy enough, I test out alternate kernels every now and then to see if I can get various modules to compile for them. Just have them both in your Lilo or Grub (or whatever other bootloader you use) then have the sources under /usr/src/linux-2.4.x or /usr/src/linux-2.6.x and then just change the link of /usr/src/linux to whichever kernel you're currently using...

Since the 2.6.x kernel requires other external applications to be re-compiled. I wasn't sure if I would need a separate copy of each application for each kernel or if they would maintain backwards compatibility. The Knoppix 3.4 CD seems to work just fine with both a 2.4.x and a 2.6.x kernels. So maybe it won't be a problem.

Also, how does matroxfb and directfb work in the new kernel? Do you still need to apply any patches or do you just config and compile?

You've got me there. Never tried setting up the fb stuff. I did try the 2.6.0pre-x at some point and that's how I know that the 2.4 and 2.6 can pretty much live on the same system without too many issues.

Has anyone successfully used the Parhelia driver with kernel 2.6 yet? I'm waiting 'til it works well enough before I upgrade to that. Right now everything is working pretty well, with the 2.4.24 kernel and my Debian unstable.
