  • cant get mandrake installed

Hello, cant get mandrake 9.2 installed. Ive reinstalled it about 50 times, and once its done and i restart computer, it boots linux in runlevel 1 or 2, but it tells me Im in runlevel 5. I tried running run level 5 and it loads everything but I still have no gui. I was told that I dont have the display configuration correct, I have my card selected as a vesa which was on default. I also tried many other ones on the list and they give me the same problem. can n/e one help?. I got a matrox parhelia.

        Apparently you don't have a /etc/X11/XF86Config.

Run xf86config to set it up. As the root user of course.

MDK 10.0 is out now as well, might as well use that... though if you're using it with Parhelia, either try the patches on the Matrox Tech support forum for kernel 2.6, or install the 2.4 kernel.

I dont understand why there is no default driver on this. it worked more then perfect when I had my geforce 4.

It's that lack of documentation thing.

The older Matrox cards are well supported out of the box, I haven't tried the Parhelia driver yet.

oh:S. I dunno how to install the driver with the runlevels, sept for runlevel 5 :S. I have the matrox cd that came with the card. n/e hints on how to install it from runlevel 1,2 or 4?

The run level should make no difference. Not quite sure what you mean.

I thought runlevels change the os look from a gui to a dos-like os look, and I dunno how to use this. Im used to the gui on kde

Uhm, first off, there IS no linux driver on the Matrox CD... You have to sign up for it, or send them the request form for the 3D driver...

You'll have to get it working in Vesa mode until you can get the Parhelia driver to install. If I hadn't just removed the 9.2 ISO's from my harddrive recently, I could help you out better.... Basically to get it working though, you'll have to download the source code for the kernel you're using and compile the mtx.o module..

Well, I have more or less a HOWTO written up for Xandros 2 for the Parhelia, (though it's not 100% complete yet, and doesn't have screenshots or anything), but you might be able to put it to use right now for MDK 9.2.

Hopefully it stays up this time... had some issues with it earlier today..

hmm, I remember getting a gui with a basic install with 9.2. Stuck at 60 hz (arghhh!!!!!) until I installed m's driver. Didn't recompile or anything, but never played any games either
